6.2L Yukon XL or Suburban 2500?

Just started looking into buying our first vintage Airstream and trying to figure out what would be the best vehicle to pull one of these beauties. We're currently looking at a 1972 29 ft long Airstream. There's 6 of us in total in our family so I need a vehicle that can seat all of us but can pull, and more importantly, have safe breaking abilities for an Airstream. The Yukon XL gets a little better gas mileage than a Suburban 2500. The Suburban 2500 by nature is a little more heavy duty. It has a higher towing rating. It gets worse gas mileage however and for the 90% of the year that we won't be pulling an Airstream this is an important factor. Any suggestions for this newbie? Any links you want to point me to?

Check payload. Carrying six people may eat it up and leave little for luggage.

Year for year, model for model, the Chevrolet Suburban and the GMC Yukon XL are the same vehicle.

They have not offered a 2500 (3/4 ton) for several years now except for law enforcement use. You may still be able to find a used one in good condition, but they are somewhat rare.

A 3/4 ton would be preferable as your passenger load will be considerable.

You are still able to special order them from your Chevy dealer. It is called the suburban hd and doesn't get advertising at all. Look under the General motors fleet / professional vehicles page and you will get the details you are looking for there. Hope this helps.

One would have to have a specific Government Fleet Account number (or specific destination allowance, ie. armored VIP build, foreign dignitary, etc.), in order to procure one new. Watch for Government auctions. I doubt any have cycled through their cycle yet.

The Suburban HD is a 3500 series, and is only rated to tow 3000#. Fleet only, and is intended to be a crew and equipment hauler for utilities, PD/FD, etc. Hopefully, GM will see the need to bring back the 2500/3500 series Suburbans for the trailering world. We could use the payload... :-)

A vintage coach deserves a vintage tow vehicle. Give it a thought. Maybe there is an International crew cab out there. Pat

Get a 2500 or 3500 Suburban from Texas. You can get an immaculate one, gas or diesel, for a song. Mine was under $5000 (diesel) with shipping to Michigan and would pull any of the new trucks apart at the middle.

Crew cab pick ups can haul six people.

Safe braking..............................for and Airstream. I'm assuming you are matching up the towing weight ratings and the gross weight of people cargo, etc you intend to tow. In my state just about anything with two axles requires trailer brakes (its a weight limit thing). Your tow vehicle will need a trailer brake controller. Yes you can stop a big trailer on the truck brakes, but not near as well.

My experience with GMC vs Chevy was when they were essentially the same rig the GMC was more $$$$$.
