1954 Cruiser 26' Park Model Question

Good Morning,

We have come across what seems like a fair deal on a vintage Airstream. However, it is a Park Model; no fresh water tank, gray tank, or black (which they didn't have in the 50's anyway). Our question is, because its a park model, does that diminish its value, including resale? Does anyone know about the size of the hot water tank? I read a post that said one they had held only 2-3 gallons of hot water. That's not enough to shower in... Any insight anyone can provide is much appreciated.

Pam and Wade,

Do you have any pictures? We have a 1954 Double Door Liner, I believe that it was a park model also for two reasons, no water tank and full length awning rails on both sides. There were no holding tanks in 1954, but water tanks were installed. The water tank was in front with the filler on the front of the trailer. Is there a hole where the water filler could have been?

What condition is the interior? Please, pictures if you have them.

Bill

Thanks for replying. We don't have any pictures. We looked at it lastnight and are going back in the next couple of hours to look in the daylight. From what we could tell it looked to be very good condition. The kitchen, wood work, stove, bathroom, lights (propane and elect.) are all intact, original and in very good condition. The front gaucho was replace with a small sofa, there is a small 1950's table set. The heater was removed and a ventless propane added. The twin beds were replaced with a double bed. The fridge was replaced with an all electric. The windows are all original and unbroken. The zolatone is original and in good shape. There didn't appear to be any leakage or soft spots on the floor. From what we could tell the outside was pristine with one tear (4") long above the streetside wheel well. They say everything works, new tires, propane tanks. It looks good (Cute) and in good condition. There is no water inlet in the front. THere is a long tube underneath on the curbside running front to back, that we don't know what its for? How does one take a shower with such a small water heater? Can fresh water tanks be added? What do you think its worth? Your insight is much appreciated.

Value

Pam and Wade,

There is a good resource for price vs. condition here: Price vs. Condition - Airstream Values

Remember this is a trailer which is 52 years old, it will probably need substantial floor repair unless everything is water tight. A check of the belly pan will give clues as to the frame and floor condition. In a trailer 52 years old something has leaked, unless it has spent its entire life indoors.

We are installing water, gray and black tanks in our Liner. The thread is here: http://www.airforums.com/forum...ner-17291.html

There are many threads on this forum about restoration, adding tanks etc. Regarding the size of the hot water heater, you take a shower and turn the water off while soaping up and turn it on to rinse off. That saves water when using the onboard water tank and also does not fill your gray tank fast.

There may be someone nearby who would help you inspect the trailer also. There is a thread entitled "So you want to buy a trailer three states away" or something like that with a list of inspectors.

Really appreciate your feedback. We looked at guide, but were caught off by it being a park model. We will look again today and see what we think. Thanks again.

If there isn't a water filler tube in the front window, its quite possible it had / has a fresh water tank under the bed. A filler tube on the side would indicate. Also, look under the bed. You'll want to inspect that area anyway. I suppose the prior owner who switched out the bed from twins to a double may have elimminated the water tank although I can't understand why someone would want to do that.

We're all waiting on some pictures.

We are the now the very proud owners of a 1954 25" Cruiser! Getting pictures ready now and will share soon. Haven't measured it, but it isn't a whale tail and has 13 panels in the back, so believe its 25'. According to the archives, the extra foot was in the tail and these were made in latter 54. Anyway, no sign of a fresh water tank at either end, but could probably put one in. This was just too good of a deal to pass by....very well taken care of. We are the 3rd owners. The folks we bought from had it 3 years and the original owners bought it new. It is so cute! Pictures coming soon....

Talking GREEN - with envy!

I'm not into restoration, but wow! This one would tempt me. Congratulations and good luck with it. Sure looks worth restoring to me. That interior is impressive.

Beatiful trailer. Looks very well cared for and in great shape. I'm also green with envy. How's the rest of the interior?
