Why are the exteriors painted, inferior aluminum??

I've heard that the reason they are painted was because the aluminum was inferior. But has any one stripped the exterior paint and polished the aluminum areas? We will need to keep the endcaps painted as they are steel. but we are thinking about maybe just polishing the middle section. Maybe we have to much time on our hands. although we really don't!

Deb,
Andy fromInlandRV recently pposted a picture of a polished Argosy.
I actually ran across this very trailer when I took my Worthington propane tanks to get polished. It looks very nice, indeed. No trace of inferior aluminum, at least not on the one i saw.

Somewhere I either read or was told that the paint colors were chosen to help to separate the two lines, Airstream from Argosy so there would be no confusion, and because of the galvanized end caps they had to paint them with something. Plus I bet at the time the automotive paint process was far cheaper than the plasticoat process.
