What Argosy is This?
I was looking for an Airstream and came across this Argosy by Airstream. It is the right size for what I want to do and certainly less of a project than the '55 AS I am considering. I forgot to measure it (on private property!) Looks like it has not been use for a while. Should I bother trying to contact the owner?

Hi Poconoair, I would contact the owner if you are interested in it. The door looks a bit messed up. But if the insides are good and that is the only thing you have to worry about, probably not a bad deal IF they want to sell it.
I am sure someone else will chime in here.

At first guess I'd say it's a 24 ft. The AC unit is not original - no loss. Looks like it might have worthington aluminum propane tanks (painted) hang onto those!
That trailer needs a bath!

I have a 24ft 78 Argosy and this looks a little longer than mine. May be a 26ft. Probably a 76 or older, but looks pretty good except for that door thing and it could be the door is just open. Worth a try to see if owners want to sell. Good luck to you. An Argosy is a great trailer. I'm including two pictures from similar angles so you can judge length. Think I'd ask why it has those blocks under the rear end.

I don't think so... all the photos i can find of 26 footers have 2 windows curbside.
Do you have any pics of the other side or the vin? The vin contains all this info including where it was made, year and length.

It is definitely a '73 or '74. '72 had no reflectors mounted on the banana wrap, and '75 was a single color, not two-tone. Rear taillight binnacle was also changed in '75. Looks like a 24' trailer. Also, midships windows indicate center twins. Streetside bedroom window would be further forward if it were a double, the window is where the closets are on a double.

You will find mixed opinions about this. originally they sold for les money than unpainted airstreams... they were lighter weight and often had cutting edge design items. They were sort of the beta test bed for standard Airstreams. Many of the features of these old trailers are now standard on new Airstreams. They have become desiralble becasue of their light weight, but don't kid yourslef, you will have lots of repair issues with an abandonded trailer of this age.
Leaks, floor rot and old axles will all have to be fixed or replaced. Systems may have to be replaced and paint will need to be redone... but once finished, you'll have a great trailer!

One of the cool things about argosys is that you can still occasionally pick one up for a song. They resell well, once fixed. we have been offered big bucks for ours.
But.. the days of great deals are rapidly disappearing.

Certainly if I get in contact with the owner and eithere don't make an offer or have my offer rejected, I will give the contact to someone here. This will take a week or more.
If the end caps are steel how did AS cut weight in these? Steel floor frame, right? Does that plate say 5800something# GVW?

I se that the owner has it jacked up and on blocks. Also door looks like it was pried out at the bottom no crease lucky. check the tires for dry rot if they are it would be easier to change while jacked up..

5800#GVW =3800 MT trailer, plus options and "stuff". 3800 plus 200 for an air conditioner, plus 60 pounds for LP+ the weight of the tanks, + the weight of the water in the holding tanks, + the weight of the awning, it should weigh about 4500 pounds in working order, plus consumables.
