Want Electric Jack for Argosy 20' Trailer

Hi, All,
It's been quite a number of years since I logged into this forum. That being said, I am older and a bit wiser and wish to buy an electric power jack for my 20 foot Argosy camper. I am tired of cranking it up and down by hand.

Has anyone any suggestions as to what is best? I called some generic RV place and was told $350, then after several exclamations on my part, the guy miraculously "found" his lowest priced one for $200. I did not get off the boat yesterday, but I think he might have!

Does the old original crank jack get removed and an electric one put in its place? What runs the electricity to it?

Thanks for any and all help.

You can find jacks reasonable priced on ebay. Barker is a good brand & good price. For electric for jack, the hot wire for breakaway swt can be spliced into as it will not interfere with breakaway swt. Jack self grounds thru mounting bolts

So does the old jack need to come off or can the new one be mounted close to it? I need someone to do this...

The new one bolts in place of the old one. Three bolts and one wire will get you in business.

Today I swaped out my busted Barker for a new heavy duty Barker. It took about 30 minutes from start to finish.

How did you fix the gas stove without tools?? How do you do upholstery and make curtains without tools? You probably know more than you think you do!

3 bolts and 1 wire are really not a high tech problem. Currently is one selling for $135 at a local surplus store. You should be able to beat that Stateside. Find someone that is mechanically inclined and barter services for the install. Perhaps a home cooked meal or some sewing would work.

Block the tongue up so you can take the jack out. Take out the three bolts and lift the old jack out. The whole thing lifts straight up leaving a hole in the tongue. lower the new jack into the hole, align the three bolt holes, insert the bolts and tighten them down. The jack is now installed. Find the lead to the break away switch that is "hot", splice the wire to the jack into that wire and you are done. Adventure RV usually has electric jacks on sale.

Doesn't look like the right thing. Go to the camping world site for what is available. Etrailer also has a good selection.

The Walmart jack would not be much help,it only lifts about 3 1/2 inches, needs to be pumped by hand and would have to be stored somewhere and carried to the front of the trailer every time you needed it. The one you need replaces the original so requires no carrying or storing also no hand pumping.Do a search on ebay for trailer tongue jack you will find plenty of them and the install is really simple, even if you decide to pay some one to do it it`s a 20 minute job.

I just bought this Husky electric jack for my Bigfoot. Reasonable price at $225....free shipping in the US. Has a braking system to help prevent blown fuses. Read some of the positive reviews. It has a cord hanger on the back side that may have to come off it it's to be installed on an AS. Srewed on plate.

I bought the Harbor Freight one and installed it, and immediately took it off and returned it. Very poorly made, very slow, and sounded like an unlubercated bucket of bolts. Made so that water could get into it very easily.

The very cheap electric RV jacks are not going to be satisfactory. Stay with a Barker, Bull Dog, or Atwood or you will be replacing it again soon.

Pre lube the bolts which hold the jack in place for several days with something like PB blaster. Spray it on both the top and bottom of the bolt up inside the tongue coupler. The bolts used are a fine thread variety, and after years of exposure they get very rusty and can be hard to remove, and you do not want to break one off.

The 1974 instructions for the jack on Henri (the `74 Sov 31-footer) says to lube the innards of it at least once a year, more often if you use it a lot.

So there. ;D
