Hey Red, I have a 73 Land Yacht 25'. I tow with a 2000 Tacoma extra cab
4wd with the 3.4 Litre v6 and manual transmission. I use a Reese dual cam hitch and have done fine, including a trip this fall to Helen Ga...a real test to get in and out of Helen! I guess you could say I've been to Helen and back...good luck, I think you'll do fine with the right hitch set up!

Waltero, what engine do you have? 3.4L V6 just seems small.

Red Rover, I know a member from the northwest has been talking about his Tacoma. It might have been one of these:

It's not always a sure thing that those folks would look back in at the right time to see your thread.

Use to tow our '68 globetrotter with a 1993 Landcruiser 4.5L I-6 215hp. Little slow on a hill but what can you expect truck, trailer, 2 people, 1/8th+/- tank fresh water 2 dogs, and all the other junk needed for 3 months weighed out a 9700# at govt. scale. truck alone was 4600#. On the flat 70mph no problem. and an 8.5-9 mpg. Didn't think that was to bad especially when another truck f250 with canopy 27' trailer and 7.3L PS diesel was only getting 11mpg. NOw tow with a 1999 Toyota Landcruiser 4.7L V8 same as the Tundra V8 and tows the same but a little quicker on hills and take-off. Your v6 is a great engine and the Gearing in the Toyota trans. is alittle different giving more torque at the wheels. 1st gear is really low. I only tow with a Toyota now!!

I tow with a 2006 Tacoma TRD. It's rated to tow 6,500 pounds. When I bought it, I specifically got it to tow my older 22-foot Safari, weight about 3,450. I was originally looking at a Tundra, but once I saw the big tow capacity of the Tacoma I decided on it right away. "I don't need more truck than I need, right?" I asked the salesman. He didn't have a clue. I still worry about whether it's too much tongue weight, because the Tacoma does groan a bit under the load, but I tow less than 5k a year so I figure it's OK.

With the 238-hp V6, my truck gets 22-23 mpg on the highway, and about 15-16 while towing. The giddyup is adequate even in the mountains, IMHO, and once you're cruising along, it's so smooth I forget it's back there. For about 60 seconds. Then I remember and frantically look back for any spare compartment doors flying off. :-o

Hey Red, waltero again, yes you read correctly, I tow the 25' with a 2000 tacoma with the 3.4 Litre V6....manual transmission....I often go through the appalachain mountains, in West Virginia on I 64 (Sandstone Mt) has a long 7 degree stretch, east of Beckley WV...other than the rockies it is as good a test as you'll find....I do it at 65 mph...or here in Virginia Afton Mt, again I run it at 65 when I have the space to keep my rpms up....

I tow our 5300 lb Bigfoot 25' with our '02 Access Cab Tundra 3.4l V6 4WD auto. The tow rating on the truck is 4800 lbs, but the truck has the same frame, suspension, and rear end as the V8 version that is rated at 6800 lbs towing, so I'm not concerned that any of the body/frame/running gear will fail. I've concluded that the lowered tow rating is primarily a result of horsepower (the 4.7l V8 develops about 50hp more than the 3.4l V6). The 5300 lb trailer tows nicely behind the Tundra, but is a little sluggish up hills compared to towing with the V10 Excursion (imagine that...)

I towed a 6 meter Minuet with a '98 Tacoma outfitted the same as yours except it was a 4X4. We went from southern New Mexico through Flagstaff, Barstow, and the gold fields of California. We were careful not to carry a lot of weight in the trailer by buying food often and leaving the water tank half full. Serious mountains (on the Arizona - California border, for example) had us down to 40 - 45 mph, otherwise no real problem for the truck. No overheating when going through the mountains. Mileage ranged from 11 to 13.5 mpg. Flat roads had us keep about 60 - 65 mph. We did not try to go everywhere at 75 mph but kept about 65 as the upper limit. We did not use an equalizer hitch but had air lifts on the Tacoma that we could level the truck and trailer with. The equalizer hitch would be better I have since decided. In short, the Tacoma and the Minuet made a nice combination.

For what it's worth, we tow a 2006 19' Bambi with a 2007 Tacoma TRD Off Road Double Cab...towing rate is 6500 lbs and the Bambi dry is 3500 lb and 4500 loaded. We have been happy with its performance. We will not win any up-hill races, but then we are not trying to win races...just get there happily an din one piece. We tow at 65 mph max. And even up hill we are usually able to go the speed limit.

I towed my 1960 22' safari with a 2000 tacoma V6 4wD a few times. It was OK, but I really thought the truck was at its limit. I traded the Tacoma for a Tundra that is 3 years newer, and it didn't cost me much more. I feel safer towing with the Tundra. I think the weight numbers that Red Rover gives are too low for trailers of those lengths.

Stella, I wish I got that kind of fuel economy! Maybe I should save for a new Tacoma. It has nearly the horsepower of my Tundra.

It looks like weights Red Rover is using are dryweights. The 6 m Minuet weighs about 3500 pounds fully loaded. It can be kept below that by loading lightly. He has an advantage over my '98 Tacoma in that he isn't hauling the 4X4 apparatus around giving him a better power to weight ratio. I have to admit that the 2006 Tacoma is a better TV with more ponies. It is a larger truck as well. The '98 did very well with the Minuet 6 m, however.

Smile Toyota Tacoma TV

Hello again, I would like to thank Everyone who has given me imput on this matter! And welcome any other opinions, specially with exp with simular TV.I also realize that I will be pushing the envelope towing the "minuet" 20 or22ft trailer. I believe the Argosy 20 will have a simular weight as the Minuet 22? I have a few specific questions from some of you kind responders. Thanks Again! Red Rover^^^

Waltero hello, thanks for the imput! What does your trailer weigh empty and loaded? Whats your gas milage- flats- mountain. How many miles on your toyota, any mods on TV? What are your rear shocks? I have just put on H-D KYB monomax shocks and new Yokohama Geolander HT/S 10.5x31 tires. Have put only about 5000 miles on them and believe they are a great combo! And thank you very much for your feedback. Red Rover^^^

Red, my 73 is listed at 4200 lbs dry, although I have done some changes, bathroom, converter etc and it came in closer to 4000 on a local scale,so I'm probably running 45-4600 loaded...Gas mileage towing, 15.8 last trip partly mountains, partly Interstates, My Tacoma has 149,000, with Bilstein rear shocks

Roger, Hello and thanks for your imput!, I agree with what you have said. I have a 99 TACOMA Prerunner TRD- 190hp- 220 ft-lb torque 5000lb tow pac/rating. With 3.4 V6 that I have,I am woundering if there is any difference between the 3.4i that you mention? The trailer I am looking to get is the Minuet 20. Weight 2450 from my info, so if I add 1000lb = 3450lb. If I add 1500lb = 3950. Witch I think will be possible with my TV, or do I have enough reserve? I welcome your opinions! Thank You, Robert. HI,
I too, own a Tacoma 2006 TRD 4-door and am looking for a 19' Bambi. I have been in touch with a forum member in the NW who tows a 25' Safari with his Tacoma. I saw a pic on the forums of his truck/trailer and asked him did I see this correctly. Yup. He said he had no problems, and to be careful. (I can find his name if you'd like to see the pics yourself.) RoadRuler tows a 73 23' Safari with a Pathfinder (I think that's right), and has told me the key to this whole this is getting the truck/trailer set up correctly with the WD/anti-sway hitch system. Also, don't be in a hurry, as TBRich said earlier. Good luck looking for your AS. I've narrowed my choice now, and just need to find it. :-)

FWIW, I think a Minuet 20 would be just about perfect behind a Tacoma, particularly if it's the extended cab version. A longer wheelbase is always more desireable in a lighter truck for towing. Your 3.4l is the same engine I have in my '02 Tundra. The rear ends and trannys would probably be different, but if your Tacoma is rated at 5000 lbs, a Minuet 20 should be well within your capacity. I'd get a weight distributing hitch and a Prodigy or P3 brake controller.

Roger
