Took a trip to the scales today...

When I bought my 20' Argosy, the title said that the trailer weighs 2000 pounds (empty). Since I knew that number was wrong and NJ doesn't issue a title for vehicles under 2500 pounds, I went through the process of getting a certified weight so DMV would issue a title. The placard on the trailer says 3100 UVW and 4500 GVW, but DMV wouldn't accept what the placard states because the old Florida title said 2000lbs. So... Off to MARPAL Waste Disposal Management to use their scales.

MARPAL don't weigh axles, just complete rigs so I didn't get numbers usable for setting up the WD hitch (the nearest CAT scale is a 2 hour drive and I had to do this during lunch).

1999 K1500 Suburban + driver +trailer = 9700lbs, dropped the trailer off and took the truck to the scales, truck= 5960 lbs, so the trailer weighs 3740 lbs. Now it's not completely empty (there's a tool bag and some other small stuff), but it's not too far off factory weight when you consider it has been retro fitted with a gray water tank, A/C unit, and the new floor I just put in. I also have 2 full 20 pound tanks up front. Oh yeah, the awning has to weigh a bit as well....

Hey! I (Pete) went to the scales today too. I needed the weight to get our new (to us) 25' Classic (rear bed) registered in California. The total of the trailer and the truck (2008 F150) was 12280 lb. The trailer only was 5440 lb. This is not completely right, though, because we still have nopt installed the custom mattresses made to fit the queen to twin conversion.

nothing like rolling the rigs on 2 the scales...

and a lot less traumatic than holiday season on the bathroom version for the owners!

This is a ritual that I have been postponing for several reasons:
1) my truck is a 3/4 ton diesel so I knew there wasn't a power issue;
2) I knew there wasn't a weight issue;
3) I knew there wasn't a tongue weight issue;
4) I know I don't have the trailer over loaded; and
5) I thought the nearest CAT scale was at least 30 miles from my home.

I recently discovered a new truck stop that has been built one exit south of the one I use to access the interstate near my home so it is maybe 8-10 minutes away. Now I have one less excuse to hook-up one Saturday and go have her weighed.

Pete, is the 5440 axle weight only, or was that the entire trailer, unhitched, on the platform. 5440lbs seems underweight for a late model classic. '03 classics were rated at just over 6000lbs dry. Just wondering.

I am going have to say-- not one way or the other. When I eased the truck off of the scale I started to unhitch and the gentleman in charge said just to lift the hitch high enough to be 'lifting' it's weight off the ball. The truck was at a weird angle and was never completely free from the hitch but the hitch was lifting the truck a bit. Also there were no liquids in any of the tanks. So, I don't really know. Guess I haven't added much concrete info to the conversation after all. BTW it is a 2006. And I don't know how much the bed frame, mattress, and microwave weighed that we removed.

Well on my trip from La Grande to Boise this afternoon I stopped at a truck stop to use my facilities and get something to eat. The scale was looking lonely. I asked at the desk how to weigh so I get each axle weight. They told me so I drove on the scale and jumped up and hit the call button. They told me they got the weights minus me. I was standing on the curb.

here is what it found.
Front axle 4780 lbs
Rear Axle 4760 lbs I got the weight distribution correct!
Trailer 8680 lbs.
Total 18,220 lbs.

Truck 9540 lbs total including the cat. That's 460 lbs below max weight! Add me that puts me at 260 lbs below max for the truck!

Trailer 8680 lbs thats 1320 lbs below max weight. 3320 lbs below the trucks tow rating.

Any idea how much water, etc you were carrying?

I had 70 gallons of waste and about 10 gallon of water. When I leave I will have 60 gallons of water and 0 waste.
