Rock Guard Advice

I'm trying to decide on which rock guard to install on my 1978 Minuet. I've looked at the posting on here for modifying the three piece product sold by Inland RV. I was wondering if the single piece unit would work on the Minuet. The one piece unit says "Rockguard Solar Standard used on Airstreams from 1969 up with smaller front side windows". The three-piece unit says "Rockguard, 3 piece for 1982-1996 narrow body Airstreams with the large Panorama windows. Individual sections available also". The lady at Inland said that the single piece unit is hinged at the top and can be raised to allow the front window of the Argosy to be used. They also sell the individual pieces of the three piece model, so I could just go with the two pieces to cover the curved glass and skip the middle. Any advice would be appreciated.

The single piece unit is designed for the typical 70's era Airstreams that had small wing windows, but not the big, wrap-around windows like your Argosy. You could probably install one on your argosy, but it is only going to cover your wing windows about half way, and will mis-fit. The problem you may find with the modern, three piece unit is that the total assembly is likely to be too wide for your trailer.

The Three-Piece Airstream Rock Guard for narrow body Airstreams is the easiest Airstream part to modify for our Minuets. The single-piece rock guard for the narrow-body Airstreams even if there were an easy modification process for its width still wouldn't accommodate the deep-wrap of the Minuet's side windows.

The second alternative for protecting the "unobtanium" deep-wrap clear wing windows is to pursue a "custom" fabric protector. There are several recent Forum threads on these fabric protectors, and I believe there is at least one supplier willing to produce them to his existing pattern.

Good luck with your investigation!

Kevin

The one-piece unit wouldn't fully protect the panos, and it would likely stick out oddly at the ends, since your Minuet is narrower than the Airstreams for which it was designed.

I have thus far been happy with the Sunbrella canvas covers with high-density foam inside. The ones I have don't protect the center window, but that one is flat safety glass so it's easier to replace. I like the fact that I can see through the trailer in my rear-view mirror.

Here is what I did to protect my Argosy windows, and after using it all summer I am very happy with it.

I also made my own rock guards, using the pebble fiberglass. You can see how they look on my Avatar. If you would like more detail. PM me.
My cost was about $200.00.
