Potable Water Drain Valve

My potable water drain valve is stuck shut (beats being stuck open I guess).

Kind of a PITA to have to use the pump to flush the 30g tank every year.

I ordered a new one from OoDM. It has two NPT thread sizes and looks like it just screws in.

The old valve is buried in a mass of plumber's putty. I assume once I remove the putty the valve should just unscrew? What are the odds of cracking the tank bung? I think I'd rather live with a stuck valve than have to replace the tank...

Old plumbers putty is sometimes not real fun to loosen. I'd use the biggest wrenches the space will allow and settle for completely taking the drain line apart if need be.
Reassemble with teflon tape.

Thumbs up Just what I did.....

.......I used one of these to prevent it EVER breaking again.....

Then attached a 1/4" ball valve for easy opening & closing.

Now that is a fix it job! I like it. Too bad I paid JC to put a new one in after I twisted the top of the plastic one off. Spectacular!

Thanks, that was the failure mode, the thin plastic handle sheared off.

I thought about going with real plumbing hardware but the old one lasted for 42 years and I stumbled on the plastic replacement while ordering something else. Also I'm less likely to strip the tank bung with plastic (I hope).
