The paint on the Argosy is in pretty good shape for the most part, except the end caps. My Dad and I think we could just rough up the paint that's on it and then repaint it. Has anyone done this and had good results? Thanks in advance.

I would think that if you are going to the effort to re-paint it you would want the new paint to have the best chance of enduring. By just adhering to the old paint...it would seem it's adhesion would only be as good as the old paint - which apparently is failing at this point. I certainly wouldn't want to do it twice...

Has anyone painted one w/o stripping, just roughing the paint or is it just as easy to strip the paint? Thanks.
Depending on the condition of the old paint will determine if it needs to be stripped. If it is not peeling it may need a good sanding to get to clean paint and provide tooth for the new paint to adhere. You also have to be sure the new and old paint do not react to each other and are compatible. I have used the same method (Roller and Tipping) boatdoc used to paint his trailer on several boats and it works great. Interlux and a few other manufactures produce paints, which will work for this method. You should review boatdocs thread then read all the manufacture data you can find on the various paints, most are single part polyurethanes. It is the method I would use if I had no peeling paint and little exposed rusted metal.

At the cost of primers and paint today I would strip it. You can strip it with sandpaper and use a good self-etching primer and you won't have the mess of a stripper.
For now I will be painting the ends with a spray paint that is so close it will be hard to tell from more than a couple of feet away. I actually think if I can get one day warm enough to put a good wax job on the Argosy that the spray paint will be an almost exact match. I am also putting on all new marker and clearance lights and I will paint the trim rails and the bottom panals with as close a color as I can find to orignal. It should actually turn out pretty good until my Dad and I can paint it next year when the weather warms up enough for good painting temps.

Last year I painted the end caps on my 75 Argosy. I sanded the endcaps with an orbital sander, primed with Dupont Vari-prime and painted with Dupont Centari acrylic enamel. Dupont 44534-AM. They turned out really nice.
On the low end of the paint chain here in Oklahoma, I have painted the end caps on my Argosy with Krylon spray paint, #1504 Ivory Gloss. It's been on a couple of years and has done very well. We did do the mid stripe and belly stripe the right way and it looks beautiful. Just haven't gotten the time to do the whole trailer ourselves.
I've got the end caps almost ready to paint. I had to do a little more work than I expected. Evidently at some time in the past something fell on the back right corner of the top, right next to the bathroom exhaust vent. The PO did an okay job with filler but now it's much better. I also got a new vent cover from Vintage Trailors I will be putting on. I have all of the sanding done and most of the taping, I also have the Argosy emblem takin off the front and it has been sanded and painted.
I have decided to change the colors of my Argosy and make it my own. The trim strips, rims (under Argosy hubcaps) and gas tanks will be Gloss Banner Red. The bottom panels (are these what people on here call the banana strips) will be Pure Blue. Eventually the rest will be white instead of the factory creme color. I hope that it turns out well. I also want to have the Argosy 24 decals up front made in the same red color. Has anybody had new decals made(cost, etc.), did they look just like old ones? I might even change the design of the decals, we'll see.
I know changing colors and what not goes against the purists who believe in maintaining original factory specs but I've always liked to have my stuff look different than everyone else(plus the PO already changed some of the interior). I've got my fingers crossed hoping that it turns out looking good and not like crap. We shall see. I'll post pics later.

I know changing colors and what not goes against the purists who believe in maintaining original factory specs but I've always liked to have my stuff look different than everyone else...
The purist aspect depends on the trailer and condition. Painting Wally’s Gold Anodized trailer would be a mistake or painting a rare trailer would not be good. Painting an Argosy to your own taste is a great idea. Many old and new trailers exist with custom exterior and interior trim. The most important thing it to get the trailer on the road for you and your family to enjoy. An Argosy is great choice as if you don’t like it repaint.
Check with Devoman the father of the Can Opener he dose Vinyl Cut and may be able to assist you with the decals.
