New axles?

Whats the deal with all these new axles? I am new to this site but keep reading about people getting new axles or wanting to get new axles soon. Are the old axles worn out or is it that the owners just want a highier rated axle to carry more weight? Maybe it is for a more modern brake axle? I just bought a 1979 argosy minuet, havent even got it home yet and was wondering if I was going to have to have 2 new axles?
