Hi all,
Finally got away Tues morn on my way to PEI. I always keep track of mileage and this trip has confirmed data from the past. Whan traveling highways or interstates buying the mid grade pays off, usually. Most vehicles today require performance with reg. My TV an 07 4runner V6 and the towed is a '79 minuet weighing in at 4020# with a hitch wt of 460.
On reg gas the mpg is 13.2 hywy and 12 +/- mixed. Using mid grade the hywy mileage is 14.4 mpg. By my calcs mid grade is a bargain up to about .25 more per gal.
Has anyone else worked this out or am I just a bit anal?

No, your not anal. My rig rig weighs much the same and gets 16 avg when using mid range or super on level. The Ridgeline's owner manual suggests using a higher grade when towing. The Ridge has a final gear ratio of 4.36.

Thanks for sharing. My TV is diesel but its great that this info is available, I also have a 1/2 camper van that I have towed the trailer with and did wonder about the use of more costly fuel.

Did you pay particular attention to the ethanol content of your fuel? It would only take one or two tanks of E-Zero gas to let your average MPGs to shoot up.

E-Zero would be regular mogas with no added ethanol.

E-85 = 85% ethanol
E-10 = Most commonly found now at pumps

i've compared regular and premium. in my case with a .35 to .40 cent difference it worked out even. i still use the premium. the difference in price between the grades varies a lot from station to station. i might try the mid grade at some point.

If you currently cruise at 65-75 mph, you'll save more gas by slowing to 55-60 instead of switching to higher octane fuel. In fact, the mileage on our 2008 Tundra CrewMax, towing our 19-foot Bambi, goes from 13.5 mpg at 60 mph, to 16.5 mpg at 45, when driving in the Rockies.

I find I get a little more zip at altitude using higher octane and travel at 60-65. But you are right about 45, traveling in a caravan last year at that speed I got 20.3. but that was tedious.

I've been using 10%. Cruising speed is usually between 55 & 60.

Have used e-zero beginning yesterday and through arrival at Bayside on PEI
Have averaged 15.8mpg in mixed but 65% hywy driving. Kinda helps to
ease the 5.20 / adjusted gallon.
