Mid 70s Argosy

All...I'm off tomorrow to take a look at a 1975 28' Argosy. I don't know if it has a rear bath or the fabled side bath, however, I am looking for any item that you all know I should be looking for besides the obvious stuff like leaks, non working gear, etc.

Do the mid 70s Argosy trailers also have issues with rear seperation like some of the 70s Airstreams encountered?

Also, anyone know any specs like waste tank capacity (I don't think they had grey tanks yet), fresh water capacity, etc for the 28' Argosy?

Thanks,

Eric

Grey water tanks..

Yes there is grey water tanks in the 1975 Argosys.. ours is 26' and has one.. you will find they are much easier to troubleshoot for the systems than Airstream.. Good Luck.. Annie

Mid 70s Argosy

Greetings Eric!

My understanding is that the Argosy can be just as susceptible to rear end separation as any other Airstream product. It does, however, seem that there are fewer incidences of rear end separation reported - - I suspect that this is more a function of the Argosy just entering the realm of collectability in more recent years.

Here is what I have regarding capacities:
Rear Bath Black Water Tank = 12 Gallons
Rear Bath Gray Water Tank = 10 Gallons
Center Bath Black Water Tank = 23 Gallons
Center Bath Gray Water Tank = 16 Gallons
Water Heater (all coaches) = 6 Gallons
Fresh Water Tank (all coaches) = 30 Gallons
Argosy 28 Rear Bath Twin = 4,020 lbs. Empty Weight/6,200 lbs. GVWR
Argosy 28 Rear Bath Double = 4,040 lbs. Empty Weight/6,200 lbs. GVWR
Argosy 28 Empty Tongue Weight - Rear Bath = 510 lbs.
Argosy 28 Center Bath Twin = 4,375 lbs Empty Weight/6,200 lbs. GVWR
Argosy 28 Center Bath Double = 4,370 lbs. Empty Weight/6,200 lbs GVWR
Argosy 28 Empty Tongue Weight - Center Bath = 405 lbs.
From what information I have, it also appears that 30 pound steel LP tanks were standard with 40 pound being optional - - aluminum tanks were also options.

The available refrigerators were either Dometic RM77 or Dometic RM100.

A bunk bed option was availabe on either of the rear bath models, but not on the center bath model - - at least according to the literature that I have available.

Good luck with your investigation!

Kevin

Thumbs up

Aaron...thanks! Great info. Spent at least an hour or so looking around there.

HD, looking for a coach for the "quasi" in-laws. The issue is that Brandi's father has some back issues and he's 6'7"!

So I'm trying to find them a coach that will be able to accomidate him.

Neighbors are gonna love me, but if we do it, it should only be here for a few months before we call them up here for a surprise.

Eric

Wink 6'7"!

Eric,

We purchased a '1976 28' rear bath about 3 months ago - after a fair amount of work we got to take it out to the Shenandoah's the last two weekends. I just measured the height and ours is exactly 6'7" (lower at the lights, AC,etc. Hope that will work for your father-in-law.

After those two weekends we need to take some time to work on it again - one of the L brackets that supports the gray water tank is so badly rusted that it separated, and the water pump just failed While using it the pitch suddenly went higher. I wonder if it's the impeller - I thought I'd start searching the forum to see if it is possible to rebuild.

We really love our Argosy - good luck!

Michelle

Sorry, forgot to post...we got there and the unit had sold just hours before we got there!

It surely won't be the last attempt!

Thanks for all the great info.

The wiring schematic for the umbilical cord and Bargman connector on the Argosy is usually the same as for the comparable model year Airstream -- at least it was on my '78 Argosy Minuet 6.0 Metre. The link below should provide the necessary wiring information for your '75 Argosy.

1966-1981 Airstream/1972-1979 Argosy Bargman Connectory Wiring Diagram

You may find that someone in the past has already rewired the Bargman connector, or you may find that the umbilical cord has been replaced by a previous owner -- it is usually advisable to use a 12-volt battery and alligator clips to verify the actual function of each wire -- on both of my vinatge coaches, the umbilical cord was original so the wire color codes matched their identified functions, but the Bargman connector had been rewired to something other than the diagram shown in the link or the modern industry standard for that matter.

Good luck with your investigation!

Kevin
