Macropoxy Paint

I am looking to repaint our 1976 28' Argosy and wanted to see if anyone has used Macropoxy Paint from Sherwin Williams. It says it is suitable for Marine applications and it is reasonably priced per gallon.

Macropoxy 646 - 100 - Protective & Marine

Macropoxy

I don't know if this paint can be applied on aluminium. It is not specify for aluminium, only steel.
For my argosy 26ft 1975, I will prime all the trailer with interlux interprotect 2000e and paint the with interlux boat paint. The rool and tip method.
I did that on my boat and was veru nice. This paint is a self leveling paint.

Macropoxy Paint

Two gallons of Imron 3500 HG will cover any Argosy trailer. (If applied properly)

The Sherwin Williams stuff might be good, but I know the Imron is excellent.

If you buy it right, two gallons plus activator will set you back about $250.

If you sand the aluminum well, it WILL stick, no primer needed. I guarantee it. (As I suspect the Sherwin Williams stuff will also)

I have some trailers I painted with the Imron over five years ago, no fading, no chalking, no peeling. It is still impressively shiny and very durable.

You are way ahead of the crowd by selecting a true epoxy)

This paint is over five years old now.

It isn't a great picture to show the wear, but there is nothing hiding in the shadows...

It still looks great.

This is an Argosy so it is already painted. Just needs I imagine a light sanding. The people at Sherwin also recommended a product called Sher-Kem. It is a metal finishing enamel. The big difference is no hardener and thus about half price. They say it is easier to work with but I imagine it may be less durable but the difference may be negligible. No idea. Any opinions about that?

The only reason I would not use an activated paint on a vehicle I cared enough about to do a respectable paint job on is if it was absolutely not in the budget.

No paint will smooth seams, not really anyway.

What do you mean by smoothing seams though?

A hard edge can be softened some by sanding, but uneven edges have to be dealt with more aggressively.

This is my argosy at the beginning of the summer. Now, the belly pan is finished and everything sealed up and ready to be painted

Before, Midway, After

I cannot seem to upload the photo to the thread but follow the link and there are before, midway, and completion photos. Still have work to do on the stripe, put in maple floor, and other minor updates but there you have it.

It matters not, I haven't been able to view 90% of the photos on AirForums in some time...

Might be punishment...

Ah...I followed your link and it looks great, So did you go with the macroproxy paint and what steps did you need to do....sand, strip or prime etc..

How strong is it, are you familiar with how to do a paint bond test? At my sign shop we paint out a small area let it cure and then scratch the test area with our fingernails to see if it scrapes off and then the second test is a tape test, use clear packing tape or scotch tape and burnish it on well and rip it off and if the paint comes up we use a different product.

I'm just curious as the Manrique said the label looks like it wasn't good for aluminum but it looks pretty darn good and i have an Argosy to paint soon. What colours did you use?
