Hi,
On the hunt (still) for my AS, and found this ad for a 74 Argosy 24'.

1974 Airstream Argosy 24ft A/C

I'm wondering if it is maybe a 23' Safari or a smaller Soverign? I've tried contacting the owner, but haven't had luck talking directly to him.

I appreciate any insight.

Looks like an Argosy to me.
Either painted silver, or stripped, polished, and the end caps painted silver. The huge wing windows, and lack of other windows in several areas an Airstream would be expected to have them gives it away.

Looks like Airstream but may be an Agosy that has been painted silver to look like a Airstream.

I thought that Argosy had a steel front and back and that was why you could not polish them.

The pictures aren't great quality and can't be enlarged. It doesn't look like there are any end cap segments. That would match the one-piece galvanized end cap of Argosy. I've got a '74 24' Argo in my driveway right now -- the rear window in the side shot is correct. Pano windows weren't introduced in the Airstream line until ... the 1980s? (eg, note that they weren't even present in the 81 Excella). There are very distinctive interior finishings unique to mid-70s Airstreams & Argosy trailers. It does appear that somebody removed the kitchen tambour. I'd be very confident in saying that your are looking at an Argosy completely silver painted (nothing polished).

I took another look at the photos. It has no visible tambours, and the "throne" is sitting on a built-up base for the black tank to sit under, both indicative of an Argosy.

No LP tanks. Certifying any OEM tanks would be a pain, if possible at all. Probably would need to buy new OPD 30# tanks. Wonder how the regulator is.

The rockguard is not proper for protecting the pano windows. You'd want a full coverage rockguard. If both pano windows are intact, they are perfectly clear without tinting and are irreplaceable. New pano windows would fit but the tint-only windows available would stick out like a sore thumb. I'd certainly protect original pano windows with a proper rockguard.

I also agree - it's an Argosy. Those deep wrap windows were only available on Argosys. Next time they showed up was on CCD's 25 years later. Some argosys had tambor doors, some not. I've seen both.

It needs axles though... If you can get the VIN, we can help more, but it looks like someone did some work. Floating floor, etc.

After reading your posts, it makes sense. I just saw a silver AS-looking trailer and didn't think that you could strip an Argosy or paint it silver.

How do you know it'll need new axles?

I emailed the guy, and tried calling once. He seems desperate to sell, as this is the 3rd posting with a reduced price each time.

The wheel well is even with the top of the wheel. You should be able to see a couple of inches of tire. The trailer is sitting too low, the axles are shot.

The trailer location is a couple of miles from me. I wish I had some time to help you out, but we are leaving for Colorado Wednesday morning for a week. The phone number listed is not an Arizona number. The area code points to Texas.

You might want to contact Brad (flyfshr), his last house was very close to the listed location. If there was an Airstream in his neighborhood, he would know about it.

OK, I understand now about the axles. That makes sense now that you point it out, but I'd never even think about it looking at the pics. I think I'll pass on further investigation.

I really laughed when you wrote about contacting Brad as he'd know about any Airstreams in his neighborhood. I know of 2 that live within a mile of my house, and 1 on the way to a friend's house. I drive my routes so I can gawk at them. ;-).

I was not aware of an Argosy that looked like this one in my old neighborhood although I'e been out of that area fro close to 15 months. Have you been able to contact the seller recently? I could go and take a look and take some pictures if this is of interest to you. Let me know.

Yes, that is a poorly painted silver Argosy. We looked at it
over the weekend. It would need some TLC, from the frame
up.

But below the frame, it's in good shape?

You might investigate the Minuet in the Vintage classifieds. He says it has been stored so there is some investigating to do about operability of the appliances. If everything is OK, the price is high but not unreasonable. Can't see the axles, but what I can see doesn't look bad. It is original upholstery, that I can guarantee.
