Inner Tail Lights

I have had our '77 Argosy 24' trailer for a year now and have had 2 trips with her. Loving the whole "Argosy" experience and slowly learning things about her.

One of the brake/turning lights was dimmer than the other and I changed it out, but I found that it was really a grounding issue. I also took off all the other lens caps and found that the inner tail lights had no bulbs in them, but there was wiring behind the metal housings.
What is the purpose of this and should I install bulbs, 1156 type I think?

Would those be your backing up lights? An empty socket that is wired up demands a bulb.

If it is an 1156 bulb and the lens is red. It is a tail light. The outside is a tail/stop/turn. If it is a clear or white lens, it is backup lights.

Could always be an after market lens. My 73 has B/U lights but one lens was red throughout. It confused me greatly for a while. Put in a bulb and see what happens. Be sure to try it in reverse and see if it lights up then. If it is the old Peterson style lens they came in numerous variations, all the same shape and size, some with and some without the clear window for the B/U light.

The inner lens is solid red, like the outside. I will put in some 1156 bulbs tonight and see what happens and I'll try reverse too.
