Brake question

Look at this picture and what we are pointing at and tell me what part of the trailer brake this is and how it works?

That would be a brake magnet. There are two types, round and ovel.
It works by being energized by the current from your brake controller, turning it on, and forcing it against a flat area on the side of the brake drum. The friction of this happening, spreads the brake shoes against the drum, stopping the trailer.

It's the brake magnet. It works by magnetically attracting to the armature that is the drum, as it drags across the drum face it acutates the primary shoe and loads the brakes.

The brake springs are different, one has to be wrong, most likely the one that broke. Which one of these spring is the right one?

I have replaced about 4 of the bottom springs. They have a habit of breaking.

Many people find it is better and more economical to buy the complete assemblies ( brake assemblies loaded) and not fool around with just replacing some parts. You can buy them for around $60 each wholesale. All new parts give you higher reliability and less on the road problems.

the oval magnets are the newer style and provide better stopping power.

the only thing you need to be concerned with replacement backing plates is the size. 10 inch vs. 12 inch. x the shoe width.

note: backing plates are specific to each side of the trailer! they are marked right and left.

when you purchase them make sure you get a "set" right and left, not two rights etc. for a single axle application.

they are less expensive than buying the parts seperately, however, if you just need replacement springs napa is a good place to get them.

The $80 price was for a pair, or $40 each. If you need the bigger ones, go http://www.etrailerpart.com/mywebs/m...34_2963056.htm

The drums are http://www.etrailerpart.com/mywebs/m...3e_1322935.htm
Be sure they have the same spindle as your current axle.

Brake parts

I can not find a place that will sell you Dexters at wholesale but I bought a set of Kelsey Hayes with drums from a place called Axles Inc., About 5 years ago. They were $80 with drums being $20 of that. They were heavy, so shipping was $50 for four. Saw Vintage Airstream.com for $60 a set of ALKO 12x2 for just the plates. Vintage trailer supply (airstreamdream) might be another location.

Thumbs up Perhaps

You might try www.axisproducts.com

Talk to Chad Backert (Sales Manager). He used to have some Dexters as well as Axis brand brakes (as well as others). They are great at matching or beating prices.

Food for thought.

Regards,
Henry
