Please add my 1977 Six Metre Minuet: 20D7-S5212

BTW this is an excellent idea. I had registered my 1953 TR2 Triumph with the Triumph Sports Car registry. Their goal is to register every possible Triumph they can, even the wrecked ones and parts cars - gives them a more complete idea of what Triumph is where and in what condition.

Good to see your post! I just wish that someone "in-the-know" could confirm the true meaning of the "S" in the plant of manufacture position. Using the "typical" meaning of the "S" in an Airstream VIN the "S" in all probability represent manufacture in the California plant often referred to as "Cerritos".

I know that Ohio and California plants were listed in the Argosy sales literature at least through 1978.

Kevin

P.S.: Hopefully some of the other "S" code Argosy travel trailer owners will respond. It will be interesting to see if there are any other relationships revealed by those VIN numbers.

Thank you for posting the document. It is the first confirmation that I have encountered in any form that gave the California plant as the location for production on an Argosy. The VIN S code made sense for California when placed in the context of Airstream VINS, but any inquiries to the factory in Jackson Center have resulted in the company line that all first generation Argosy travel trailers were produced in Versailles, OH. To me, at least, this confirms suspicions.

I believe that your Minuet may be among the first two or three to be reported with the "S" designation for production in the California plant. Bex's post earlier in this thread confirms via documentation in his trailer that the "S" has a high probability (there are so few "positives" in the world of Vintage Airstream/Argosy that I am reluctant to say definitely) of indicating California production . . . something that Airstream hasn't yet confirmed.

Again, Welcome to the Forums!

Kevin

I wonder if the document is there because its was made for the Canadian market perhaps? Maybe some form of legislation required the information for importation?

You are likely correct . . . something of a permanently attached certificate of origin. My '64 Overlander had something similar during the time that it was owned by its original purchasers . . . the second owner removed it from the interior of the pantry door next to the refrigerator. I am wondering what happened to the certificate on my Minuet . . . I purchased it from its original owner and he included anything and everything that came with the trailer but I haven't found a certificate inside of any cabinet or anything other than purchase orders/receipts in the trailer's manila envelope.

I am truly enjoying following this thread . . .

There are a couple of other units within a half hour of me. One for sale the other is a permanent lakeside holiday home.
I will knock on the doors of each and see what I can find out about them, get the Vin's at the very least I guess, and see if the same document is stuck in those as well.
And yes, this thread is a great idea.

Thanks Bex and Kevin - glad to be here.

With respect to Ohio ser #s vs California ser #s I was wondering if the California Argosys were made after those made in Ohio - I.e. that all production of some models of Argosy were moved from OH to CA. This theory would suggest that S California ser #s would be higher than V Ohio #s. However, I noticed in the VIN listing a V (Ohio) 20 ft Argosy with a ser # higher than my S (possibly California) Minuet.

Having just acquired our Minuet, I'm going to start to scour the trailer to see if I can find any other indication of build location. (I checked the locker above the fridge as suggested - no manuf's label or plate there).

With my 1953 Triumph TR2 sports car, starting with the previous owner I managed to track back through 8 owners to the original owner. This 85 year old advised me that he special-ordered the car from England in 1953, before they were sold at dealerships in North America. Thus I found out I had only the fourth Triumph TR to come to North America.

I'm thinking if I similarly research the ownership history of our Minuet, someone from its past might shed some light on its origins.

Thanks for all the quality work you guys are doing - every club needs your kind of glue to keep things together.

Will

Hey Last Open Road, I see we are neighbours!
I would love to see your TR2. We had a Spitfire back when we lived in the UK (I decided we had to sell it to buy a newer, more practical car,....... idiot!) from the mid '70's, last of the chrome bumpers.

Hi Bex

Greetings BEX

Yes we are neighbours!

As a new member , understandably I can't send a PM - I was going to send you my e-mail address so we don't bore our fellow streamers with sports car talk. If you like, send me a PM with your e-mail.

Following up on BEX's suggestion, I went through our "California" S Minuet, but couldn't find ant sign of the document/plate that BEX's and Kevin's have.

Doesn't mean it didn't have the document at one time - like Kevin's it may have been removed at some point.

Kevin makes a good point: this label/plate in the locker above the fridge could have been an extra requirement for Argosys/Airstreams sold in Canada. After all, all beer sold in Canada regardless of country of origin must have "bier" as well as "beer" on the label to comply with our English/French bilingualism policy!

Possibility: if our 'S' Minuet we have up here in Canada doesn't have this label, it may be because the trailer was originally purchased in the USA, and then subsequently brought to Canada. However, Kevin's Argosy - located in the US - also had this label. It must have come from Canada at one time ........ we would like it back, please!

I'm quite enjoying this chase......

"We would like it back, please!" ...that's funny Last Open Road

Janet...I'm not sure what you mean by no longer in service but I noted that by the vin#.
