interesting history. i'm glad this thread was started because it will be interesting to see how the vin's unfold over time. when I see argosy's for sale I always want to know what their vin is, how rare is the rear door (currently aware of 2 other 24's for sale), how many are left in general...

Unless Airstream has recently released production figures by model, there aren't any reliable or generally accepted production numbers for first generation Argosy travel trailers by model. The production numbers that I have heard for early model Airstreams are based upon known VIN numbers collected in a manner similar to this project. I don't have precise introduction dates for the Argosy 22 and 24 trailers with the rear entry floorplan, but they were offered for, at most, four model years at the end of the first generation Argosy production.

Kevin

P.S.: I am inclined to believe that fewer Argosy 24 rear entry floorplan trailers built than the Argosy 22 as my research indicates that the 22-foot version of the floorplan was introduced about a year earlier than the 24-foot version.

Great Idea - Will also be interesting to see which were the first and the last ones made. My VIN for my 6.0 minuet - stamped as made in Aug 78 is

20D9V 6926

Is there a different code for the Minuets and the 20'. How many 6.0 minuets were made?

So for those of you who are in the know...does the layout affect the sequence #? Or does that years sequence # run regardless of the layout? I can't imagine they kept separate sets of #'s for the layouts but didn't know if someone might actually know. and yes, as leherrick asks, is there a separate set of sequence #s for the minuets?

The Minuets seem to create almost as many mysteries as all other first generation Argosys combined! I have tried to get an answer to that particularly if the standard Argosy trailers in 20, 22, and 24 foot variants were offered alongside the Minuets. It would have made things easier for us if Airstream had used the metric measurements in the VIN just as they did in the advertising rather than going back to the English measurements in the VINs.

So far as I have been able to determine, there is not way to tell just with a VIN number whether a 20, 22, or 24 foot Argosy manufactured in 1977, 1978, or 1979 is a "standard" Argosy or a Minuet. Airstream has been a bit more liberal with information on many things regarding its Vintage products maybe they will clarify some of the questions surrounding our First Generation Argosy VINs.

Please add my 1977 Six Metre Minuet: 20D7-S5212

BTW this is an excellent idea. I had registered my 1953 TR2 Triumph with the Triumph Sports Car registry. Their goal is to register every possible Triumph they can, even the wrecked ones and parts cars - gives them a more complete idea of what Triumph is where and in what condition.

Good to see your post! I just wish that someone "in-the-know" could confirm the true meaning of the "S" in the plant of manufacture position. Using the "typical" meaning of the "S" in an Airstream VIN the "S" in all probability represent manufacture in the California plant often referred to as "Cerritos".

I know that Ohio and California plants were listed in the Argosy sales literature at least through 1978.

Kevin

P.S.: Hopefully some of the other "S" code Argosy travel trailer owners will respond. It will be interesting to see if there are any other relationships revealed by those VIN numbers.

Thank you for posting the document. It is the first confirmation that I have encountered in any form that gave the California plant as the location for production on an Argosy. The VIN S code made sense for California when placed in the context of Airstream VINS, but any inquiries to the factory in Jackson Center have resulted in the company line that all first generation Argosy travel trailers were produced in Versailles, OH. To me, at least, this confirms suspicions.

I believe that your Minuet may be among the first two or three to be reported with the "S" designation for production in the California plant. Bex's post earlier in this thread confirms via documentation in his trailer that the "S" has a high probability (there are so few "positives" in the world of Vintage Airstream/Argosy that I am reluctant to say definitely) of indicating California production . . . something that Airstream hasn't yet confirmed.

Again, Welcome to the Forums!

Kevin
