Quick Update. I am working on a new comprehensive Argosy database containing both trailers and motorhomes (including 1979 Airstream MHs) by merging previous lists and adding many new units based upon posts in multiple AirFourms threads. I am not ready to post the file yet, but think I have made a interesting discovery regarding Argosy trailers that I did not want to wait to share.

So far the data seems to show that in 1978-79 Versailles and Cerritos only built "narrow width" 20', 22', and 24' (6.0, 6.7, and 7.3 metre) Minuets and all 24', 27', and 30' "standard width" 1978-79 Argosies were built in Jackson Center.

We can exchange email addresses via PM or the AirForums email feature if you do not want to post it in the open. Thanks again.
Sure, I need to update the Motorhome list first however. I can provide it to you in spreadsheet format.

Thanks,

Brad

Hi Brad,
Thanks in advance. I look forward to it.

I have basically already created your last posted version by OCR'ing the image files and then hand correcting the OCR output and then importing into Excel. Then I merged it with the last posted version of the Argosy VIN file from this thread and have added as many additional Argosy trailer and MH serial numbers as I have been able to turn up from a few AirForums threads, but you likely have found some new ones that I did not. I will eventually post my new version, but I am still actively working on it and do not want to post something that is not as complete as I can currently make it, knowing that a new version would be required within days.

Thanks again!

Hi Joe

I shared a link to this page on the new Airstream Motorhome Enthusiasts group on Facebook as there are quiet a few pre'79 motorhome owners on there. Hopefully a few will make contact with you.

Thanks Biggmixx!

I also want to note the announcement of the new 1959-80 Airstream and Argosy Serial Number Decoder in this other thread:
https://www.airforums.com/forums/f49...er-210031.html

The Argosy trailer and motor home portion of that decoder was largely created from the Argosy VIN Number database that was developed in this thread. Thanks, everyone!

But keep posting your serial numbers. There may be new details yet to learn.

Look closely at the vin number. The S is really an 8

26= length
D= rear bath double bed
8= 1978
V= made in Versailles, OH
0177= Sequential Serial Number

Another VIN, for a '73 26-er

I got my 2nd Argosy (the departure of my first is a painful story), in 2018 and have been rehabbing it ever since. It's a 26-foot front gaucho twin, VIN 26T3V0213. Thanks for compiling this!

1972 Argosy 26’

We just purchased our Argosy 26’ Monday. Most of the interior is original. Our VIN is A26T2V00017. The production date on the sticker inside the cabinet is 3/29/72.

Still taking Argosy Vins?

I just joined Air Forums yesterday
... WARNING...
I know Nothing about AirStreams but yet I just bought two Argosy MH’s. I have lots of questions....

First VIN is 264VJ0233
74 Argosy ATC Mobile Audiometric Test Center. I had never seen one. Neat story behind how it was first purchased at the Jackson Center in Ohio. I’ll share on the proper thread?

Second VIN 28T8V5166
78 Airstream Argosy 280

They are both in need physically... 74 mostly cosmetic, 78 mostly everything. Both have 454’s and run great so that’s a big relief ... I’ll find the proper thread for this rebuild as well. Well so much for my introduction in to Air Threadom... I’m GVA: Tennessee born and raised BUT living the Life in Alabama!

I believe the Argosy plant in Versailles only opened in March 1972, though I forget the exact day. Seems you have the 17th Argosy ever built!

That’s really exciting! I’m so happy to have found her. Are there brochures or photos of how they looked originally? Ours is intact inside (for the most part) but there are some things missing or altered.

I am sure that Argosy brochures exist, though the earliest ones might be for the 1973 model year (but his is only a guess) as the beginning of production in March 1972 was actually fairly late in the 1972 model year. We don't know the exact model year changeover dates, but I suspect that by the early 1970s Airstream model production changeover was in May or June. Assuming that is correct, it may not have been prudent to develop a 1972 Argosy brochure. Also, the big public" release may not have occurred until a month or two after production began to ensure all the dealers had stock to show off, which gets even closer to the beginning of 1973 production. But this is all speculation as I have not studied those details.

I can tell you that there is a little 1973 Argosy documentation in the Airstream Document Archive, but it is incomplete and no brochure photos, though it seems an image of a brochure specifications page is included:
https://www.airstream.com/owners/doc...ive/year/1973/

Note that the "Argosy Weight Specifications" page in the 1973 archive is not for 1973. It lists a 28' model and also gray (auxiliary) holding tank capacities, but these were not available until the 1974 model year.

Interestingly, the NADA guides online do not list a 1972 model year for Argosy, with 1973 listed as the first model year:
https://www.nadaguides.com/RVs/1973/Argosy

Early Argosy Production Info

The following "facts" come from a stories in the October 1972 Argosy Compass internal employee newspaper.
  • The Argosy Plant is Versailles began production on March 21, 1972.
  • They initially did "batch runs" building a batch of one length, before switching to a different length. This would mean it would take a while to get dealers a stocks of all the different lengths for their showroom floor.
  • The sizes of the initial batches was not noted, but the second cycle of batch runs ranged from 50 to 350 trailers of a given size in a batch.
  • As of October 1972, Argosy was shipping 10 trailers a day to it's 131 official Argosy Dealers, including one Argosy to it's dealer in Germany!
  • The average Argosy buyer age at that times was 42, but the youngest was only 19 and the oldest was 71.
  • The very first Argosy built was delivered to Northwoods Trailer Sales in Mt. Morris, MI. Northwoods had been an Airstream Dealer since 1963.
And this from an article in the December 1971 issue of the Airstream Compass:
  • The Argosy Plant is Versailles was then under construction and was being built to have a capacity of 100 trailers/week, though their initial production target was 50 trailers/week.

Thank you for the information. 1973 was the earliest I had been able to locate as well. The NADA information is also fascinating.
