For your reference, go to the first page of this forum to see the letters and numbers used to generate the VIN tag. It is very selective explanatory. I hope you find this information helpful.

After thinking about you having a center bath, the VIN number should have read 28A6V, A for center bath.There was obviously a mistake when stamping the tag. I personally know the person who hand stamped the tags back then and it doesn't surprise me he made a mistake. LOL I hope you are enjoying your Argosy as much as I am. You have a great floor plan with the rear bed.

20= length
D=center bath
3=1973
V=Versailles, OH
0360= the 360th unit built
That's my best guess

You deciphered the VIN correctly except for the model. D is for double bed. A 20 foot Argosy would have never had a center bath.
I hope this helps

I ran across this Argosy vin thread a few weeks ago and it got me thinking. I have an 74 Argosy 20’ motorhome and always wondered where it fit in the grand scheme of all things Argosy. For the past 5 or 6 years I have been compiling a list of Argosy motorhomes and their associated Airstream assigned vin numbers.
After looking through the database started by 247stream and now being maintained by GoNomad I decided to add in the Argosy motorhome vin numbers that I have captured over the years. My main area of interest has been the number of Argosy motorhomes made and I always wondered if there was any sort of rhyme or reason to how they were numbered. I’ve attached four images of the combined trailer/motorhome database and there are some interesting patterns.
The first thing I noted was the motorhome vin numbers seemed to be assigned in blocks. There are a few exceptions but for the most part each year there was a block of numbers assigned for motorhomes and the rest for trailers. All of the entries in magenta are motorhomes. Any entry in yellow was supposedly manufactured in California. The second thing noted was the same block pattern applied to the California units as well. As I mentioned there are exceptions to those two statements but not many.
I would also like to find out more about the California produced Argosies. I was surprised to find that motorhomes were produced in both locations. I would expect to produce a motorhome would have created a whole new set of complexities for a manufacturing facility and I would have thought they would have centralized their manufacture to one facility. Motorhome manufacturing commenced in 1974 with all units produced in Versailles. However starting in 1975 California production commenced and there were a fair number of motorhomes manufactured there as well. One thing I haven’t been able to ascertain is whether all of the motorhome chassis came from the same GM plant or if each Argosy plant was supplied from different GM plants.
One other thing I would like to bring attention to are motorhomes M24DV5315 and M24D5S5318. I have personally seen and been inside of each of these units and they are identical with the exception as to which plant they were manufactured in!
Anyway, just thought I’d share the combined vin list. Many thanks to 247stream and GoNomad for creating and maintaining the original list and I hope I didn't step on anyone's toes by combining the two lists
Brad
