I don't have the official specs for Argosys; however, I have a 1978 24ft Argosy that I took to the truck scales before I towed it home from El Paso. It had no water in it, or actually anything else extra at the time. The weight was 3608 lbs. Of course by now I'm sure it exceeds that weight by about 500 lbs. You sure can get a lot of "stuff" into one of these in a very short time. I have the double bed in the middle and there is a lot of storage in the trailer. The mid-twins don't have as much.

I'm with you ... it is still a bit confusing for me. I've had my 72 Argosy 22 for just under a year and when I look at those weight charts I get more confused. I forget what the nameplate says, but the previous owner had it weighed and it was nearly 4800lbs almost empty. I would keep that in mind when considering a tow vehicle. Just my "rookie" 2 cents.

The "factory dry weight" is the base weight of the trailer, not including options or accessories. An air conditioner or awning would not be included in the dry weight figure, nor would fresh water or LP.

I'd like to add that our 1972 Argosy 24T2 has a GVRW of 3,800. That must mean that the empty trailer weighs substantially less, presumably around 3,000. I am sourcing an original owner's manual and will post any updates.

Factory data about the first generation was comparatively scarce until the past few years. Airstream has added more information about the first generation Argosy travel trailers to their site with almost every refision . . . but they also juggle the data so that links often don't work to materials after a revision.
Today, the site doesn't have much information for the 1972 coaches, but they do have the page from the showroom literature that gives the standard equipment for the 1973 coaches which wouldn't have been significantly different from the 1972 coaches. You can find this document at this link. They also have the suggested retail prices for 1973 Argosy coach's at this link. Argosy trailer weights are also posted at this link for 1973. I realize that this information is for 1973, but any information for the 1972 model year, the introductory year for the first generation Argosy travely trailers is quite limited. I am including a scan of my brochure for 1975 Argosy travel trailers, the floorplans illustrated will be quite similar to your 1972, but there will likely be some changes.
Good luck in your quest for information about your coach!
Kevin

I plan to use my 94 Buick Roadmaster, plus tow package. Just upgrading from Class 2 to Class 3 hitch to have some reserve capacity.

Thanks, I'll check this out.
To my surprise, at Camper Barn in Kingston I saw a 28 1975 Argosy that supposedly had a GVWR of 3,200 on the VIN plate... Can't be right.

I would say that the dry weight of your trailer would be 3,800 lbs, possibly including options. The empty weight might be 3,610 lbs. I would guess that the Gross Trailer weight would be around 5,600 lbs.

Tx Dan,
I am upgrading to a class III hitch anyway. But what does GVWR on the VIN plate mean then? I always thought this was the max allowable weight.

That's what it means. The empty weight on my '74 Argosy 26' is 3900#. The GVWR is 6200#. The empty tongue weight is 540#. The loaded tongue weight is 820#.
The class 3 hitch would not be rated for this tongue weight without WD. There are a lot of ball mounts out there that are not rated for the load you are carrying. Be sure to check the specs of the ball mount.
I recently upgraded from a class 3 to a class 5 hitch.

You are correct. That is what it means. However if your Vin plate lists the GVWR of 3,800 lbs, I would say that it is an error.
