Is it necessary to have the black plastic shroud that goes around the battery in the battery compartment? If so, is it possible to upgrade to a slightly larger cover? Mine is dry-rotted, cracking and slightly too small for a new battery I bought. Thanks in advance since you guys always jump on these things!
The Argosy of that era generally used one Group 24 battery and nothing else will fit into the space. You could build a larger one from something like plywood, but it should be sealed so any gasses vent to the outside via the original cover door. That way you could put a longer one in (group 27, 29 or 31) and get more capacity. If you use an AGM battery you don't need to worry about venting.
I have a 24ft Argosy that I ripped the plastic battery box out of and installed 2 AGM batteries in the same location. Then there was enough room left to put an outside shower hidden behind the old battery door.
There was a ton of wasted space under that bunk.
