Question Argosy '77 "J: Channel for Paneling

I have started the preliminary restoration of my newly acquired '77 Argosy and already have a question for anyone. I was washing the walls down around the front wrap-around window and find that the plastic "J" channel trim that is around the end of the paneling that is pop riveted to the window trim is broken and brittle. The only thing I can think to call this trim is "J" channel. This piece of plastic trim slips on the end of the paneling with the approximately 1" side going on the back side of the paneling; the end is squared off at 90* and the exposed front of the channel is about 1/4". Hope this explains what I am looking for. Does anyone know what this channel is called and where I might find some? Thanks in advance for taking your time to reply. I think this project will be fun - I see how you can get "hooked" on restoration! Carol

"J" channel replacement

I had the same problem on my '76. I could not find a replacment so I used the clear protectors you put on a car door to stop chipping of the door edge.

I have the same problem with my 78 Argosy. It had that little molding around the front window too; however, I just pulled what was left of it off and really don't even notice it's gone. The molding that goes over the ceiling is still there but very brittle. I just try not to damage it and am grateful for as long as I have it. If you find something that will replace it gracefully, please let all of us Argosy owners know.

Thanks to everyone that has responded to my question. This site is just wonderful for getting answers....thanks to all the great members like yourselves. I will check at Home Depot. You made me wonder if the vinyl plastic trim that they put on the edges of the sheeted shower enclosure material might work. If I find something I will let everyone know. It's truly amazing that the plastic has lasted as long as it has. I still have 2 feet of snow on the ground and will start on the serious work when it melts away and I can get the tarp off. This weekend I removed the dinette seating, some of the twin bed unit and washed all the walls down. I haven't found any floor wood rot yet, but think it best to strip it down and apply the Rot Doctor CPES product - seems like that is the product most recommended the members here. I have a tendency to do everything in "overkill" mode, so might was well do a preventative coating on the floor. I didn't get the trailer until last Fall, so haven't had a chance to test the lighting, fans, A/C and appliances......hoping that my $200 purchase won't require me to get a 2nd job??? Thanks again for taking the time to respond to my question - I'm sure it won't be my last. Carol

Hi Judy! Thanks for the reply. I think I got a deal, but let's wait and see how much needs replaced and repaired. The outside is dent free and the orange and white stripped awning is in great shape - too early to tell. I see that you are an active member of this site and thought you might help me with a question. This is the 2nd time I have asked a question and thought it might be better to "search" my question before posting it. When I use the "search" feature I usually get a page of previous threads. Some have the heading in "bold" and others not. My problem is I don't know how to tell which threads deal with my question? It's probably simple, but I don't seem to get it. I have tried looking at the "bolded" threads and they don't seem to address any portion of my question. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I hate to keep asking questions that have already been addressed. Looks like you have a wonderful Argosy - did you have to do extensive resortation? Thanks - Carol

Rivet Solved!

Yes, that stuff sure does get brittle!

Some decent suppliers of Airstream restoration parts don't have this J trim. I found OEM quality J trim for a very low price at Oasis RV, the Airstream dealer in Tucson -- and I did check for any number of alternatives at Home Despot and ACE. I dealt with Oasis by phone and there was no doubt we were talking about the same thing -- very knowledgeable folks in their parts dept!! They measure off your desired length and it arrives in 4-5 days coiled all in one piece. Call them at 1-800-658-5863 and you will be happy!

I've not figured out what I paid about a year ago but my seat-of-the-pants thoughts are between $1.15 and $1.35 per foot. It sure beats the raw metal edge as the alternative! It's pretty easy to use too. You'll just have to lay in a stock of white 1/8" pop rivets - medium was better than short, especially if at the window extrusions.

The material won't flex enough to make the curves at the windows. You'll need to snip the wider hidden flange about every inch or so. Order a little extra so you can experiment.

Extruded Plastic J Channel Cap

Larry and I have been working on the walls, and our J channel was broken and very brittle too. Found it at Jackson Center at the AS Factory. It was 14 cents a foot. We bought 40 ft. of it and it was only $5.60. Item # 200019. That was in 2003.

Mother ship??

Annie,
We had to go there for other "stuff" and got it at the factory when we asked about it. They usually ask you to go through a dealership to get things, but we have not tried asking!!! Go fer it!!!
Let us know when you are in our area!!

Thanks again to everyone that has shared their experiences of finding the elusive "j" channel. I will check with the Airstream Dealer nearest me and see if the item is still available. It amazes me, the wealth of information that all of you have and are willing to share. Carol
