It's less than 20 gallons (more like 15), and you know it's full by looking into the hole when you open the valve on the toilet.

According to Airstream's data from back in the day, it's 12 gallons of black (main), 10 gallons of gray (auxiliary.) And 30 gallons of fresh water! I don't know what they expected you to do with the other 8 gallons.

Capacities

My '74 Argosy has a 12 gallon black and a 10 gallon grey. I'll bet yours is the same.

'74 was the first year for grey tanks. So, unless yours was retrofitted, you only have the black tank.

6 gallons would go in the water heater, leaving only 2 gallons unaccounted for. That would probably stay in the fresh water tank, so the pump didn't run dry.

I *thought* '73s didn't have gray, but that PDF I linked to was under '73 Argosy on Airstream's site. I wonder if they just scanned a manual from the wrong year. It lists the same size tanks as my '75 so it seemed realistic enough, and they did some other things first on Argosy trailers (like panorama windows) I thought maybe they started earlier with gray tanks too.

The drain would be the same, but there'd be an extra valve. My 75's black dump handle is inside the bumper locker, and the gray dump handle is on the street side a little forward of the drain.

I don't believe it was AS's intend to size the black and grey water tanks to hold all of the water in the fresh water tank. They simply put tanks in that would fit in the space allocated along with the weight consideration.
One really can't count the 6 gallons in the water heater since the only way to get it ( the 6 gallons) out once it is filled, is to drain it. Most people fill the water heater along with filling the fresh water tank so that both are at max capacity.

I'm afraid so. Depending on how it was done, either a new valve or a rebuild kit is in your future. If nothing has been glued to the valve, it's a LOT better to replace.
