At any rate, the long fabric strap makes it easier to start the awning unrolling or to finish the last of rolling it up. You should have a hook somewhere that lets you engage the loop in the strap to start unrolling the awning from its furled position once you've unlocked it. Once you have the awning all the way unfurled, the strap usually will slide over to one end or the other of the awning roll and you can wrap it around one of the poles to keep it out of the way, then slide it back to the center when you're ready to stow the awning and use it to control the rate of the awning rolling itself back up.
I'm not sure what you mean by "three holes in the awning" and can't see any holes in the awning, but it looks like you got yourself a nice SquareStream there! Welcome to the forums.
