1974 Argosy 28' info?

Hello all. I've been lurking on these boards for a while now while I try to talk my wife into letting me get an Airstream/Argosy. Well, I've found a very nice one that I'm really interested to purchase. I've done some digging here with the search button and tried to Google for some info but am having a hard time coming up with any info. Could anyone give me info on a 1974 Argosy 28'? I'd like to find out what the dry and loaded weights are and tank capacities. Also, if anyone has some good info on what the price range of this trailer might be. This one is in immaculate condition for it's age and just polished. Thanks for the help!

Got it right here ... BTW, hope you're liking the Forums! Please speak up if you have any questions.

My '74 manual is all-inclusive -- only one manual for all models Argosy trailers that year. Trailer payload = GVWR - curb wt.

28' rear bath:
twin bed GVWR 6200#
double bed GVWR 6200#
curb wt w/o options - twin 4020#, double 4040#
GAWR 5600#
Factory tongue wt w/o options or variable wt -- 510#

28' center bath:
twin bed GVWR 6200#
double bed GVWR 6200#
curb wt w/o options - twin 4375#, double 4370#
GAWR 5600#
Factory tongue wt w/o options or variable wt -- 405#

Ah yess... Tank capacities seem to be the same for virtually the entire Argosy line in 1974. This was also the first year for grey tanks. Yay!

Black tank, rear bath -- 12 gal
Black tank, center bath -- 23 gal
Grey tank, rear bath -- 10 gal
Grey tank, center bath -- 16 gal
Water tank -- 30 gal
Water Heater -- 6 gal

I'm not trying to pile up the posts -- just want to help quickly. Gotta move my just winterized '06 Safari from the driveway back to storage. See this link: http://www.vintageairstream.com/rr_t...condition.html

There are no hard and fast numbers. I'd look carefully under the gaucho to see if it looks like there is any dark or rotten plywood under either the front or back of the water tank -- most likely from the windows, not the tank. Is the back shell well caulked at the rear bumper? Does the battery compartment seem real intact and solid? Take the battery out and inspect tray & caulking under it carefully.

Does the A/C work? Only use a 30A circuit (like in a campground) to check or else it could burn out the compressor. Have them start the fridge one or two days before you inspect it -- it'll take that long to cool.

Best wishes -- and let us hear about your results!

Thanks Bob! That was a lot of great info. That Argosy sure is one lightweight 28 footer! I'm a bit bummed about the small grey tank though. Maybe I can have one added later along with some tank monitors. I think I read someplace that this trailer didn't have monitoring systems? According to the seller (who is a pretty reputable vintage trailer restorer) all the appliances work well and it's water tight with a great solid floor.

The monitoring system was not standard on Argosy coaches, but was an available option. When equipped with this option, the monitor panel can be found in side the roof locker above the range -- it was typically mounted to the edge of the range hood exhaust vent. I have only seen one coach with this option, but much of my experience has been with the Minuets where it doesn't appear that the option was available.

Good luck with your investigation!

Kevin
