1973 Argosy Trailer ID
Hey Guys, Big Dad here, new to this forum. I have a question for you guys. I found a 1973 Argosy for sale. It will need a total restoration, that I will do in my shop, as I have been Building, restoring and repairing RV since 1978. My question to you guys is, is this trailer on the rare side. It appears to be about 20' with dual axles, and this one only has one window on each side. Most of the Argosy trailers that I have seen have 2 on the road side and 1 or 2 on the curb side. Check out the pic's and any info would be great.
Thanks,
Big Dad

Interesting. They made an Argosy22 in '75, perhaps that had tandem axles? I've never seen a 20 with tandems. In your 2nd photo, it's cut off on the right where there's usually a number after the word "Argosy" just forward of the door. There's a '72 Argosy22 with nice photos in the classifieds (already sold.)
The first 2 digits of the serial number will tell you the nominal length, something like 22D3Vxxxx if this is a 22 with folding double bed. You can find that serial number on the tag that's low on the street side of the nose and possibly stamped in large characters down the top flange of the tongue.

Another place to look for the serial # is on the fridge vent stack inside the cupboard. Mine has a paper glued onto the vent stack with the info on it.

There were a lot of experiments with the Argosy line, and all kinds of variations have shown up. For example, the photo you show has a small rear window, and that is not common or standard in my experience. But from the looks of it overall, I would guess it is at least a 22' not a 20' (I have a 20' so I am used to the proportions). But my 20' '74 has only one window on each side, like the one you show. So, who knows, you may have found another variation.

Looks like my rear door 22, but that lack of glass is disturbing. Speaking of glass, you may want to duct tape some cardboard over those pano(curved) windows for the drive home.
One errant rock would cost $1000 providing you can find some one parting out a Argo.
What are they asking?
Looks like some recent work, AC unit and awning we're not orig in 73 (I may be wrong)

They are asking $3500.00 The interior is 40% complete, but has been hacked. Being in the RV Restoration/Repair business for 36yrs, I had visions of a complete re-do in my flavor?

Nice length. But the asking price is too high for the condition.
Even doing all of the work yourself you are looking at a $15K investment by the time you finish. Axles, tires and a professional paint job will be around $7,000. Not to mention the interior work and appliances.
A '73 did not have a grey water tank. Just so you know.

I have been doing this for a long time. The sheet metal and paint is right up my alley, however I do agree there will be money spent. Its a labor of love at this point. I think I can get it for much less as well. Will have to see what comes of it, if I can get the price to about $1500.00 to $2000.00 My plan was to completely re-figure the interior to my needs, basically gutting it and laying out a different floor plan. I know this does not go along with keeping it to it's original spec's, but truly the original floor plan sucks and there you have it. Will keep you posted, and thank you for the posts,
Big Dad

At 2K, you could make out just by parting out the pano windows. Waste of a good unit though.

It looks the same as my 73" E-22, same small window on the rear and sides. Tom
