Wyoming a must visit

Why? Wyoming tourism is featuring an Airstream trailer as a central focal point in their TV ad. It plays big in Minnesota. I don't know where else. You owe it to yourself as an Airstreamer to make Wyoming a must visit to pay them a courtesy for recognizing Airstream as THE tourist RV. That should be easy considering Yellowstone National Park is mostly in Wyoming.

While in the Black Hills a few years back, we took a day and visited "Devil's Tower" in Wyoming. Magnificent!! We walked around it and saw all the columns that had "calved" or fallen from it and a sign said that one fell every so many thousand years and that it had been a few thousand since one had fallen. My Wife said, "Let's get out of here, It's due".

You can't imagine the size until you see it. there were climbers on ropes and they were so high you couldn't tell if they were male or female.

It is actually the core of an extinct volcano and the exterior has eroded away.

We made it out to Wyoming a couple of years ago. Best trip ever.

Next time we will need to detour through North Dakota. We refuse to set foot in South Dakota.

It was also the setting for the 1977 Steven Speilberg classic Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind. Did anyone see an Airstream in that movie?

I was a Wyoming resident for a few years. Today I live in Utah, mostly because it's close to Wyoming.

The typical trip people make is to visit Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.

If you have the and time, like to get off the major tourist tracks, try spending a day or two in some of the small towns that you would otherwise just drive through. Most of those towns have a small tourist center and a museum of local history, and the volunteers who work there will share detailed stories of things in the museum if you ask them - typically, retired people who have personal knowledge of area.

Quite a different experience from visiting the big parks (those are a 'must do' too). When we have a week and no special need to go somewhere, we just head to Wyoming, camp in the small towns and hike in the Wind River or Big Horn mountains, and are always sad when the week is over!

Scary. 30 years is a long time to spend in prison.

My favorite place in Wyoming is the Irma Hotel. We got to stay in Colonel Cody's private suite.

If you get to Laramie you can tour the territorial prison where Butch Cassidy was incarcerated. It is a museum now and worth touring. Also, the University of Wyoming has an excellent museum on western art. Our son and daughter-in-law received their masters degrees there so what had the opportunity to visit many times.

If any of you are going back to Devil's Tower and to anyone who has not yet gone, when you are walking around the east side there is something special for you to see. Over 100 years ago two local ranchers were the first to climb it. They did it on the eastern face by driving large wooden pegs into a crack, climbing up on them and driving more above. They tied the outside end of the pegs to vertical poles like the side of a ladder. The climate is dry enough that some of the ladder is still visible. If you are observant on the east side you will find a pipe sticking out the ground with another piece of pipe welded across the top of it. If you sight through the top pipe you will see the area where remnants of the ladder remain. Once you know where to look you can easily find it with your binoculars.

I was born and raised on a cattle ranch 45 miles west of Devil's Tower. We could easily see the Tower from our place as well as the Missouri Buttes that are near it. Yes, indeed Wyoming is a very special place to me.

Thanks for starting this thread. I'd thought of starting one after seeing it too. I first saw the ad on Saturday Night Live a week ago. Did they play it again last night? It featured a young boy -- dreamy kind of -- looking at a reflection in a storefront window and seeing an Airstream pass by -- he was most impressed too! Looked about like a 28' or 31'. Think I still have it on VCR tape (eh buddy? ya gotta speak into the cone!) so I can't translate it into computer pichers very easily...

Yes, it was on Saturday Night Live again last night. I saw it once during the 6 PM news as well which leaves me to believe it might just be targeted to certain markets. I doubt it would be playing in New York.

It's definitely an ad with high production values. It grabs you from across the room, and you can't take your eyes off it.

The bison herd running in front of Devil's Tower is the clincher.

Probably one reason the WY tourism ad features an Airstream is the the Governor (Dave Freudenthal) owns one! The mayor of Laramie also has one, actually two - a new bunkhouse & a '65 Caravel and has been known to frequent the RMVAC rally.
