The only Orvis I know anything about is Orvis Hot Springs near Ouray, Colorado. Most of it is clothing optional. This is not the same Orvis.

Next, Neiman Marcus used to send us catalogues years ago because my wife bought something there a few times. The cost of the catalogues must have been far more than the profit on what she bought. To do that means the markups must be very, very high. N-M always had a few one of a kind items for incredible amounts of money—this attracts attention, thus free publicity, and elevates the value of the other catalogue products sold in many people's opinion. Orvis apparently does a version of this type of marketing.

The TTT job looks cool, though not to my taste and it doesn't fit our needs. There are people with lots and lots of money (income differentials are higher than probably anytime in the past century) who can afford this and have no need to invest in more practical parts of the national economy. To me it is a sort of fantasy. I can build things that look pretty cool too. Like Frank says, it takes me a lot more time than a professional, but it looks cool. Do I need it? No. Does it make my wife happy? Yes. Time and money are not infinite, so there are limits.

Much has been said over the years about baby boomers. It is said they can't stop buying, have royal tastes and spend more than they have. So, if that is true (I am unsure myself) you could make this trailer an example of baby boomer excess. Or you can make it out to be a symptom of an economy slanted toward the 1% (or 2% or 5%). And it may be so…

But I think it is just a marketing ploy by a catalogue company.

To distill what I was trying to say;
At the current bid of $60k it is still below a new Airstream of the same size.

I would point out that at the $60,000 bid, reserve is not met so that's not a valid comparison. I don't think anyone's actually paying the $60+k list for a new 23 footer, either.

Smile It doesn't have to be one or the other

It doesn't have to be one or the other.

Envy is an emotion. One that the holder can choose to express or contain within themselves.

Bad mouthing is just one of many ways that envy and some other emotions can be expressed.

So both can be right.............. or maybe wrong.

I agree that the money invested in this project, is probably considerably in excess of what the final bid will be, but Orvis has a good advertising write off.

Concerning the mention of buying an empty shell from Airstream and having it built to spec by a an outside builder:
There is at least one person who has posted on the forums that has done this. However I doubt seriously that they will jump into this simmering cauldron to tell us about it.

No, but I'm sure we'll find someone here to stir the pot before all is said and done.

Anyone, anyone

It's a nice AS and if someone has enough money to buy it (someone will) then I'm happy for them. Not in my price range but if I ever buy a lottery ticket ... Maybe.

Have seen a 30 ft that TTT did from a new shell. Whaterver it cost it was "worth it" to the folks who have it. Not something I could afford, but a very nice classic looking airstream fitted for a special interest. Yeah, I have tossed a lot of Orvis flies, leaders, and lines, and have one of their rods. Will not be bidding on the trailer though.
