Nice Article. Thanks for sharing. Someone did a nice job restoring that Bambi for MOMA.

Interesting article - but what I found most curious is why Cheney used an Airstream inside a C-47 rather than simply using a more plush executive aircraft? The airstream was obviously tied down too well, and modified too much, to be used outside the plane as a trailer. It may have had something to do with the capabilities of the C-47 in the areas to be visited.

That was good, thanks Bob. Between the TODAY show last week and this article, Airstreams are getting some extra publicity.

Thanks for sharing!
Great article. Wow now when they say Cheney's in an undisclosed location we'll all wonder if he's airstreaming at a higher altitude
Very nice info!

Wally's promise
An article which captures the true Airstream creedo.
I realize that the author is not exposing new revelations when describing Wally's nonpolitical journeys to all ends of our planet.....what surprizes me is that so many followers are willing to let a few degrade the promised adventure to full hook up RV parks in our backyards.
The article should help wake up the majority who own Airstreams to follow Wally around the world, creating goodwill while expolring the unique attributes of distant societies in lands charted and uncharted. Of course here in America, that could be a caravan from one state to another.
The Bambi may be in a museum, but our Airstreams should be free to roam, and we are lucky enough to hitch a ride.

thanks to both of you for sharing these articles! it's cool to see how similiar airstreams are inside, even the v p's. i loved the bambi pics, but i still think the new ford concept airstream is weird! not that i wouldn't take one if given to me, but still weird. i'd take the bambi or another airstream anyday!

C-17, not C-47
Guys,
It was a C-17, which is a 4-engine high wing jet transport with a huge lift gate in the tail. They just drive the Airstream up inside.
A C-47 is the military version of the DC-3, a twin engine low wing prop plane from the 1930's. A Bambi won't go inside a C-47.
Both planes are pretty stark inside. I guess ol' Dick wanted to travel in style

Thanks Bob,
I was just thinking about heading out to find a NY Times and you provided the article. My contribution to Airforms is already starting to pay off!

good article
That was pretty good....
Love the statement “Airstream is one of those companies that is part of the heart and soul of American design,” Funny, not much mentioned on mandalay bay or four wind motorhomes... but then again there isn't much to say about boxes on wheels

C-47
RE: A Bambi won't go inside a C-47.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Neither would I. I rode in one of those in '67. It was a Michigan Air National Guard bird. Came in on one engine, the pilot hopped out said "gotta fix something, be just a minute." And then we all (about 8 of us) proceded across lake Michigan to another base. White knuckles, for sure!
cheers, bill b.

There is a long list of folks at Airstream and MoMA that are responsible for this great addition to the mesuem. The restoration was done by the AS Service Team in JC and they truely did a wonderful job. More to follow in the next edition of Airstream Life Magazine!
