Wow. They're so lucky nothing landed on the trailer.

Almost all the comforts of home.

One of the reasons I bought a trailer - anticipating the "big one" (earthquake).

We had a 7.7 off the coast last Saturday night. It could have been the big one, had it hit closer to the urban areas.

A wake-up call to make sure the trailer always has propane, canned food, extra medical supplies/ Rxs, etc. year round, and the fresh water tank is filled from spring - fall.

Do not mean to sound opportunistic amidst the tragedy of Sandy, but when people see how comfortable those Airstreamers are, it might give them incentive to buy a trailer with the 30k FEMA grant.

BTW, has anyone heard how Colonial Airstream in NJ fared during the storm? They are a major dealer with a large inventory.

Glad was able to help the one lady pay 8K for her boiler last year and who only know how much this go round. Found it interesting the guy was all about getting an extra 30K from your tax dollars over and above what the insurance company pay's (if that is so true). As he said "Really, sure I can use an extra 30K"

Patrick and Lauren,

There are many of us out here who have all of the Colonial Airstream family in our prayers. We are so thankful you are safe and sound.

It's true. Here's a quote from the FEMA web page:

Quote:
Disaster assistance is financial or direct assistance to individuals and families whose property has been damaged or destroyed as a result of a federally-declared disaster, and whose losses are not covered by insurance. It is meant to help you with critical expenses that cannot be covered in other ways. This assistance is not intended to restore your damaged property to its condition before the disaster.
People will have to apply and qualify. Renters are out of luck; the assistance will go to homeowners, not tenants. Multi-family units (apartment complexes) will not be eligible for FEMA assistance.

If it goes anything like after Hurricane Katrina, the application process will be long and arduous, and even people who should qualify may have to apply more than once because they missed something they needed in their application and had to start over. And not everyone who applies and qualifies will get the full amount.

It's true, BUT it's not in addition to insurance payments. From your quote: "whose losses are not covered by insurance"

I just can't imagine what it's like for the folks affected by this! My thoughts go out to them.

Well, I suppose that people who are under-insured could get something. But they'd have an even harder time with the application process. FEMA is not exactly a charitable organization, and they'll do the bare minimum necessary to fulfill their charter, and not one bit more.
