The camping world is about a mile from the AS place. Realloy sad, because they were just one of two AS dealerships in the Chicago area, and the other one kinda blows.

Neither myself, or any of my co-workers, have ever caught anything on fire in any of the shops we've worked at.
Oops, nose grew so fast it knocked over the monitor.
Anyone who's done mechanical or construction work can tell you that fires can spring up in an instant from seemingly inconsequential actions. After the dash for the extinguishers and blowing away the masses of powder you stand back and say "Ooohhh, should have seen that coming". Luckily we have never caused any real damage or have had anyone injured.
The titles "Sparky" or "Flash" only hang around for a week or so.

Tom.

Thanks for all the good thoughts and comments. We won't know until tomorrow or later about the fate of the Base Camp. Jerry looked at all the pictures of the fire on the Web that he could find. There seems to be a Base Camp parked outside from what we could tell through the smoke and fuzziness of the shots. We obviously can't tell if that is ours. The dealership had another new Base Camp on the lot and I think that is about where it was parked when we dropped off ours last week for the warranty work. Is ours destroyed?? Don't know yet.

The folks who work there are just good solid people with alot of experience and knowledge. It is wonderful that no one was hurt. I will let all of you know when I know something. We are taking it in stride. I just hope that the business will recover and the workers can stay employed and that they are well insured.

More later,
Caryl

Sorry to hear about the fire. They also have the AS dealership in Davenport, Iowa. I vist there quite often. Very good people to deal with.

What a total shame. Glad no one was hurt. I'm sure insurance will kick in and that they will be back in no time. Kind of spooky when it hits that close to home.

OK, in retrospect the fridge fire jab was a bit off,

Actually it was pretty funny. But then I think humor is the antidote to tragedy.

The Fridge tye in was very appropriate...
Is the hot topic this year, and could be very true.
Serious with humor is good to make us all go take a look at our own fridges, fire safety issues and insurance.

Chicago Airstream Dealer Destroyed ?

Last night T.V. News showed RV Dealer Fire at the Bolingbrook (Chgo) Dealer. They shared a building with a truck repair center,it appears the fire started there and destroyed the entire complex.
All the people were able to escape. The video look's really bad.Plus the trailers in the showroom had propane tanks on them which exploded.
I hope that they will rebuild in the area and continue to provide the excellent service that they did.
Will report more as soon as possible.

Base Camp Destroyed in Fire

The Chicago RV Dealer fire yesterday did destroy our Base Camp. Basically the dealership and all Airstreams in the showroom, service shop and next to the building were destroyed. The only thing left is melted aluminum and some steel. Our Base Camp was in for service and, well, I guess it doesn't need service any more. Basically, the trailers and the building appear vaporized.

I couldn't find the thread on this fire, so if the moderator would like to attach this note to that thread, please do so.

Jerry, my husband, took some shots there today. The management is figuring out things with the insurance company and stated that they will rebuild and expect to be comparable to their Davenport Iowa facility.

This shot is what is left of the Base Camp. several of you asked for pictures and unfortunately, this is all I have:

I merged your new thread onto the fire thread. I'm really sorry to hear you lost your new base camp. Not much left of it! I hope they get you set up with a new one before you miss too much of camping season!

More Pics of the Chicago Airstream dealership as of this pm

Here are some other pictures of the fire. The truck was one of the company tow vehicles. The rest show what's left of the building. Looks like everything vaporized except steel. Jerry brought home an ingot of aluminum about 2" by 6". Maybe that was a Bambi???

I am sure we will be back and going soon enough. Although I loved the Base Camp and we were just getting going, we will move forward and build new friends and memories.

thanks,
Caryl
