No, No, Say it IS so. It's too painful just to think that someone would bury an Airstream, let alone a whole herd of 'em. It's like a WBCCI convention gone mad.

No, I'm not referring to the Bates crime. I'm referring to the REAL Streamhenge shown in post #21.

What happens when the world becomes so cluttered that a person needs to start sticking things in the sand to become noticed?

Isn't the true story and history of Airstream enough to sell them?

Just a philosophical question that crosses my mind when I see this type of attention gimmick.

Airstreamasylum

It is very sad that a vendor so values his bottom line that he'd put valuable (after all, there was a limited number made) Airstreams up to ridicule like that. It doesn't even look like "Cadillac Ranch".
I wonder if he had a plan before he started stickin' them in the ground?
He forgets the big moan he got from the Perry, GA crowd last year when he mentioned that he planned to do that. When he found out that Airstream owners thought it was a really bad idea, he should have taken the hint! I always admire an Airstream on the level. Our numbers in the midwest are growing but we could use more, on the level, of course!

BTW, my daughter just saw one on I-44 heading east going by Springfield, MO.

Hopefully the one she saw was oriented horizontally.
Also, we may not like it, but Frank owns these trailers, and they are his to dispose of as he sees fit. AFAIK, those trailers have all been on his lot for sale for some time, and he could probably get a better return doing to them what he did, and writing it off for advertising, than selling them for what "street value" would be.

I sort of understand it for advertising, ect.

But, I still do not like it or the Cadillac Ranch either.

Restore or part out, do not bury them....................

Oh c'mon guys... lighten up! No one rushed down to the sales lot to rescue these old beasts. I hate to say this, but not all trailers are
worth saving. Frame-off restorations are a huge undertaking and are not inexpensive. Of all the junk Airstreams out there, very few are of a quality that bear a full restoation. Even fewer have enough value after the restoration to warrant investing in a restoration.

These were undoubtedly old, tired trailers that didn't warrant undertaking a restoration. IMHO, they're better off serving this purpose than being recycled into aluminum cans.

Talking just what i saw.....

i drove by frank bates place on tuesday morning 10ish....these were all set out of the normal sales lot....too be honest....from 200 feet away on I4 it looked to me that these had all been rolled to some extent, windows gone, and massive damage to each of the larger ones...the only one that caught my eye at 60 was the smaller which i was guessing was a safari or one of the 25 ft models....that was the only one of the bunch from my side that i would have even stopped to ask after...i tell you....all but one looked like it had been rolled or had major major major damage prior to setup....

In the year 2525, if man is still alive, if woman can survive some guy back from a rocket shot to Venus will get off course and end up with his space ship next to this display of Airstreams. He might think he is on the planet of the apes but after jerking one of these aluminum puppies out of the ground and hooking it up to his broken ship, he will be smiling and on his way again.

Bates sells more than AS. What a clever way to attract potential buyers form the many competitors along I4.

I do not worry about the tired 70's-80's 31' and 34' in the photo's, as these tired trailers are in plentiful supply. I cringe at the fact that what appears to be an early 60's 19' Globetrotter has been made part of this display. That trailer does not appear to have body damage from what can be seen in the photo's and it does have restoration value.

I don't doubt that at all. Frank Bates is a very good businessman and if he could have sold them, he would have sold them. After all, that is the business he is in...

Maybe he has found a new way to do "axle replacements"!!! Unbolt the axle and it falls 5 feet to the ground. If nothing else, maybe a few spares could be had in the middle of the night.

Saves you MOO-La!!

Frank saves you MOO-La!! Maybe next year he will bury his Helicopter collection by the Airstreams.

All jokes aside, when I was there picking up my trailer I saw the original 34' prototype slide out mule trailer. They said it has 300k miles on it, and they burned up three chevrolet trucks towing it around the country.
