It could be it's just some people who restore and might also sell aluminum trailers and there's nothing nefarious about it. It's all speculation on our part.

They're either Aliens ("living among us", a "closed club") and they're conducting some kind of research/study of earthlings.

OR

It's that Matthew McConaughey guy buying up every peice of aluminum his endless supply of money can buy - that's what I'd be doing if I had an endless supply (we all know it's addicting . . . and it's probably a good thing I DON'T have an endless supply)

Rat Indeed!

I looked into this and the trust factor goes down on this one. For example, If you enter in the IP address directly - 66.219.29.210, you get taken to the Vintage Airstream Forums. These forums have only been set up in the last month or so. The site is hosted out of North Carolina at a company called Netriplex (that might be a clue).

For me, the real telling piece of information is a statement on the home page:
Quote:
a vintage trailer hustler working the internet was recently discovered to be a registered sex offender who was convicted of a violent rape. This person was operating for years before concerned people in the Airstream community brought his past to light, and had him kicked off eBay, and out of all but one public forum. The business ethic of this person was questionable on its own, but imagine the people who allowed this type criminal to come to their home without knowing who he really was? You totally avoid this situation by selling to the club.
I mention that because I only know of one person who ever made a big deal about this story - one person... And that story is about 5 years old now.

Hey guys you are way off about this club. It is all on the up and up and not Nigerian. It was started by a serious trailer collector and geared toward the vintage trailer collector. Unlike most clubs you cannot just join. You need to be invited in. This club has zero connection to Cortez and his site. I was asked if I wanted to join and am considering the offer. Three of the members involved own over 30 trailers. I have a long way to go to get to those numbers. That is everything I know.

I wonder if the person the site was warning everyone about is the person who is running the site. I didn't see any names I could run through the Megans list database on their website. Is this a real club, with members nationwide, or just some yahoo trying to find ignorant sellers?
Not that I would ever use a service like that myself, but this just smells really bad. I bet there's marks all over it where people were touching it with a ten-foot-pole.

I don't think so.

Well Frank, our last posts overlapped, and it seems that you have proven me to be incorrect in my assesment of this situation. I would have to say that their website leaves me with too many questions about the character of the person/ people who put it up. The reference to a rapist being used as a marketing tool is beyond the pale to me. If they are legit, they would do themselves a service by removing that.
What about the link to vintage airstream forums? What do you know about that?

Well, i guess the desire to own a camper validates this sort of behavior these days. Today we are supposed to accept this kind of slander as not being offensive. If you read the website and were not offended you should have been. That the claim that they can be trusted but any other interested parties are potential thieves, rapist, and murders goes largely unremarked is just a sign of how common this type of hyperbole, fear-mongering, and low class behavior has become.

Today, I feel like a chopped knockwurst!
Gen Disarray is right in that this kind of marketing has become somewhat common, and in some businesses standard faire. Knock the competition to make yourself look better is the theme, and as a salesperson I have been instructed to NEVER take that tack to make a sale. There are better ways to instill doubt about your competition than accusing them of being rapists, like asking how long they have been in business?, what is their guarantee like, or if they offer one?, are they a licensed contractor?, are they licensed to do business here? How do they rate with the BBB? None of these questions makes me sound like I'm bad-mouthing anyone, but it raises the questions that will lead to doubt in the mind of a client and cause them to ask these questions of your competitors. In contrast, if I say "those guys are rapists, and you are in danger if you do business with them" then I sound like an idiot at best, and possibly a slanderer or worse.
If this is the only problem they have then perhaps they are a legit venture with bad marketing guidance. I hope that's the case. It's an easily solved problem, really.

Why does everything always have to be a scam? Why does everyone have to be up to no good? Not sure I understand the anger I read in this thread. Why are "we" always right and "they" are always wrong? Not really looking for an answer, just feeling reflective today. Must be the holidays that has me feeling this way.

I have told you all I know and wish I had said nothing. I did not even know this thread was going on until a friend called me on the phone to let me know I was asked the question.
