New Owner "ALMOST"

Hi. I am waiting to get my new to me '78 AS Sovereign. The old owner has had it for 15 years and wants one last trip to the Rodeo in it. When I asked about keeping it caulked and sealed he said AS trailers don't need caulking because they don't leak. He says this is his third one and he has been a lifetime AS owner. Th unit has been kept in one of the rainiest places in the US for fifteen years and there is no sign to me of leaks. But my perusing of the various forums shows folks talking about caulking windows and so forth. What's up with this? I see no signs of water leakage in the unit. We looked in every cupboard and drawer. It smells great. Any advice?

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

Airstreams as a rule do not need much in the way of "caulking"

The main reason it seems to be discussed here is we are forever replacing stuff the is skin penatrating, like new roof vents. ther is some cauling that may need to be maintained at the tops of the trim strips taht run around the trailer, but is there is none now don't worry about it. Most of the older trailers have had owners that had a leak at some point and instead of taking the time to find it and fix it they got out the caulking gun and the silicone and messed up a perfectly good trailer. There are others that wer caulked for no other reason than "I don't want it to leak" not there ever was one. It sounds like your current owner knows his stuff.

I don't know what kind of deal you got, but if the rig is clean, has been maintained, and is the size you want, you done good. Good ones go fast, so don't delay!

good luck on you "new" 1978 AS. I just bought my 78 soverign Sat. It is real clean on the inside and out. I am looking forward to minor remodeling and some serious cleaning since it has set empty for a few years.
