So I had the chance to buy the Airstream of choice and I did.

Sold my 74 Overlander ( It is in France by now, that's another story !)

I now own a 87 Excella 1000 31 ft rear twin

Question to those who have replaced their AC units:

What did you replace it with ?

We have a '99 like yours. The A/C died in Texas this spring as weather turned HOT. Made it back to NC, and the boys at Out Of Doors Mart in Colfax replaced it with a 15,000 Dometic Penguin. WOW, what a difference. Quieter, colder, doesn't blow breaker anymore. Nice!

Had the original go up in Florida last summer and replaced with the same 13500 Dometic Penguin. Makes more noise, cheaper plastic but dropped right on in 15 minutes when it was 90 degrees out thank goodness.

I bought a 15k BTU Briskair unit. It is dirt simple and does not have any electronic widgets to go bad. You will need to add an air distribution box and possible a heater strip option and then there is shipping. I think mine was about $900 shipped. Mine seems to cool the trailer well and I have an 81 center bath like yours. You are going to need the drain kit as well.

Thanx Bill.. The Northeast tends to put a little more strain on them. Waiting out the winter, cannot wait till spring!

Last month when I was getting service at Jackson Center, I had them clear the drain lines. When it came time to test the a/c unit, the motor seized. Since it was 25 years old it was time to change it, and factory service put in a "plain jane" 13,500 btu Penguin unit. There is an addition kit for the drain which includes two small pans (instead of the one large one) and hoses with a Y connector. As well, there is a different foam gasket as the Airstream has a rounded roof. Before ordering you may want to call Jackson Center and find out just what additional parts/kits are needed.

Well , finally got around to replacing the AC. It had a Coleman Mach in it and I decided to replace it with that. Took out the old one in about 20 minutes. Used a tractor loader bucket to lower it down. Put the new one in the loader bucket and raised it up. Took 2 of us about 5 minutes to put in place. Took about 30 minutes to do the inside, and that was it. Next stop, the fridge. Since this is pretty much land locked at the campground, going to just get a compact household one. A few folks have done it and with a small bead of caulk, it fits right in the opening.
