Lamar-

It's really located where the kickplate is under the cabinet door--and in our trailer is covered with carpet. I don't think there's anything visible inside the cabinet, but I'd have to look at it again to be sure. It's in front of the wheel well by about a foot or so IIRC.

Hi, Dallas,

Thanks. I see some screw holes inside the cabinet under the microwave compartment where a false floor might have been. No safe for me, it seems.

Safe

Did you try pulling on the carpet on the little rise in the floor below the closets? Usually it was hidden there and you had to pull the carpet down. It's mounted to the floor so it will be somewhere at floor level behind something. We totaled our 79 last year and we took the safe out of it, too bad there is no place to "hide" it in the new one. Safe

Hi, Jan,

Thanks. My trailer has the triple hall closet. The forward two doors go to the water pump and plumbing underneath. The third door has floor plywood under the carpet. The doors underneath the microwave just aft of the fridge have parquet under them.

I've had an entertaining time looking for this thing, but if there's a safe in this trailer, I have no idea where it is.

Then again, I'm pretty confident that I don't have any floor rot!

Thanks again,

Lamar

Keep trying on the forum, someone still has to have one in their trailer. They were not that scarce.

found it

Yes, there is a safety deposit box in my trailer, with two locks. Of course, a previous owner had to break a key off inside it. I brought it to a locksmith and he said it was all but impossible to open. It was attached to the floor under the galley sink by two 1/2 screws, and I had simply assumed it was part of the heating ducts for the past few months... maybe I'll try one more locksmith, but I thought this guy would get it, after all he had a giant white, waxed handlebar moustache!

oh yeah, it was in my 1979 Excella 500, now is rolling around in the trunk of my car--just popped it out of the floor with a screwdriver--how secure was that?!

Fairly secure, I guess, if you haven't got it opened yet.

Nope, not one under the sink. It's official. I've looked at every bit of floor in this trailer and this is one old Excella that is Theodore Bargemanless.

Oddly enough, I grew up in "the town that Sherman refused to burn." What's there? Some 200 moldy old national registry of historical homes, a Denverlike "Not in my backyard" mentality, and a Confederate cemetry with a sign put up by the Daughters of the Confederacy in 1976, which, if I'm not mistaken, says, "Here lie the bodies of 208 brave Confederate soldiers and 1 Negro hospital attendant named Zach." Nearby lie the bodies of my grandfather and grandmother, and I'll be there someday, too.

Gee, that's morbid.

I still think it must be somewhere in it. But you could have a really rare one without. Maybe it was originally ordered that way. We just gave our safe away to someone who ould use it in their "older" unit, we couldn't find anywhere to put it in the new traciler so didn't want it laying around. We still have the owners and service manual from it tho. Taking them to the Vintage rally to see if anyone needs them. Sure do miss the Excella 500 and my bathtub. I still think it was the nicest looking of all Excella 500s and all others that Airstream made. We were parked on a street just before we wrecked it and a guy stopped to tell us it was the best looking Airstream he'd ever seen, I fully agree!

I have a safe under my 78' Excella sink also which is (aft) to the right. I found mine to be in good working order once I learned how to use the keys. :-) It is a rectangular tan box about 12" long and about 4" wide with two keys.

I have the rear twin center bath Excella model and have found that my safe was manufactured in California. I also called the manufacturing company and Airstream Parts dept. and no one there knew anything about my safe so I assumed it was after market but it now seems that it must have been installed when new.
