New Light for the cedar closet
We have a new LED light for the cedar closet where the light fixture looks like this.
The LED light looks like this.
I'm not sure if the bulb we tested was the original bulb or not but the New LED light was about twice as bright.
The part numbers are
H9BW for Bright White
H9WW for warm white

Dan,
We don't have any LED bulbs in our '99 but wonder about them. Is retrofitting easy?

I'm not Dan, but I've worked with him. Retrofitting is as easy as unplugging the old bulb and plugging in the new LED. A customer with no mechanical ability (mechanically declined?) was able to change one out in less than 5 minutes.

On this particular light it is pretty easy. You just pop off the plastic cover and remove the old bulb (once it is cool) which is on a spring loaded arms. Then reverse the order to install the new LED light. It is very easy and more light in the closet.
On an over-all retrofit the first thing you would want to do is figure out how much light you want coming from your light fixture. In most cases you’re going to want just as much light as you had. For an example, the reading light over the couch in a Safari/Flying Cloud is an 1141 bulb in a sideways configuration. Some what like the below picture.
The most powerful 12 volt cluster bulb will not produce enough light to equal the light you have with an 1141. With an 1141 you get 402 lumens and with the larger cluster bulbs you get 145 lumens tops. Cluster bulbs have their place but for a reading light you’re going to want a pad. In an LED pad, where all the LEDs are point in the same direction, you get allot more light. With a large Warm White pad you get 764 lumens and 1195 lumens with a bright white (Airstream part# 15751W-08). Both of those numbers are with a clear lens. With a white lens (which is what is in the Cloud there) you get 386 lumens warm white and 477 Bright white. By the way, the power draw is cut down to 12% in this application.
Most applications are very easy. It is just a matter of taking out the old bulb or pad and putting the new one in. For the most part you need a good plan.

At least to my knowledge 1141 has about 260 lumens. And thats at 12.8 volts something the light won't be seeing on bat. power. I find my LED clusters are "equivalent enough" to the 1141 and actually do not appear to be visibly dimmer. Perhaps they measure dimmer.

Wow, that's wonderful information and a lot more than I knew about LEDs. I'll see how we do this first year, and then make one or two changes at a time. Thanks so much.
