Are Airstreams Noisy in the Rain?

We get this question asked a lot. So we did a video.

I can hear rain hitting, I LOVE the sound, no bother to me whatsoever.

One of the joys of my childhood was being in my aunt and uncle's Airstream when I was about 10 years old -- and listening to the rain on the aluminum. It is a very comforting and almost hypnotic sound. During a month's long trip this past summer there were a number of opportunities to hear this sound again and again. It has not lost its impact. I'd also say that IF your trailer is leakproof (and mine was), being in there in any kind of a shower was enjoyable. Now, if you had a trailer full of kids who'd been cooped up for a couple of days? Not so sure....others can weigh in on that!

The sound of a thunderstorm on the Airstream roof gives a sense of comfort and security we seldom get to enjoy in our everyday lives. Cherish it. Hail, notsomuch.

Yup, I love a rainy day in the Airstream, no where else I'd rather be! Sounds like the modern ones are a bit quieter than the vintage.

I own both an Airstream and an Square Box Trailer. Much prefer the Airstream in the rain, and even more so if wind is involved. We have ridden out some severe thunderstorms in both, the Airstream seemed to shed the wind much better. I really don't worry about hail too much, we do get a bit, however the Airstream is vintage and has it's fair share of "beauty marks" whats a few more.

Listening to the rain in my Airstream lulls me to sleep. I am one that has trouble sleeping A LOT at home, but never in the Airstream.

And we have games for the daytime. A little rain (and sometimes a lot of rain) would not stop us from going camping.

I don't mind a rainy nights since I glued some refletex to the bottom of my two old style vents. Rain hitting on that thin aluminum of the vent was just too much. Now it is muffled and quiet like the rest of the trailer skin. We had a run of camping trips where we spent a lot of time (way too much) confined to the Trade Wind due to heavy rain. The wife is happy now that I deadened the sound somewhat. Another benefit is now we have a little insulation up there rather than just the thin aluminum. I used spray adhesive to stick the reflextex in place after carefully cutting it to fit.

I grew up going to vacations at my Grandmothers house. Still remember the sound of rain on her tin roof. Being in the Airstream during a rain shower reminds me of that time. I sleep like a baby.

Well, isn't that special. I would have thought maybe we weren't much worse, but quieter? Wow.

Patrick…..REALLY???????

You call that rain? The test should have been made with a regular microphone with no gain control, not a point and shoot. Many consumer devices hear some sounds as unwanted noise.
No matter, I love to listen to the rhythm of the falling rain, Unless I am recording a song in my Argosy.

The sound of the rain and wind was more noticeable in my old Bambi II. I think most of the insulation was pretty shot. The new Safari is much better insulated and sealed from the elements.

Yes, Airstreams are noisy in the rain. In the video it wasn't raining, maybe just sprinkling a little.

Are Airstreams Noisy in the Rain?

Like the video, the only place I really hear rain in my trailer is the plastic sky lights.

It might have something to do with the three and a half inch insulation I stuffed in between the skins and the 1/4" wood I put over the interior walls though.

Noisy or musical?

As I spend time in my Airstream on a rainy day, I am reminded of the Disney musical where the house roof is leaking into all the diffrent pots, and each has its own tone. My vent covers make one, the bathroom vent makes another, the roof its own exc: I love the sounds!
