Hi,

My name is Chuck Neir, in Sammamish, WA and am refurbishing a 1974 Land Yacht and am closely following Minno's thread. I am now building our bed frame.

In Minno's Little Girl, 50967, Page 24, slide #336, you made a comment regarding a bed frame you designed to accommodate a card table. I, too, thought that was an outstanding suggestion. Do you have pictures of that design that you would be willing to share?

Thank you.

Thank you. I am looking forward to your pictures.

I got an answer from Minno that they have not done it yet but plan to do it this spring.

Thanks. Chuck Neir

Aren't these Silver Tubes Fun!!!

OK, I just spent the last 45 minutes reading this entire thread. What I have to say is:

Aren't these old trailer FUN???!!!!!!!!!!

I have a 34' Avion that I've done a lot of the same stuff to that HiHo has done to his 34' Airstream. Sure, they can aggravate you. But man can they be fun!

I've installed new A/C unit and painted the roof white (etching, aircraft zinc chromate primer nasty, the works....), new water heater (went from LP only to dual fuel), new toilet, new fridge (and the one that Dometic said was the new replacement for the old one was taller, hit the roof radius, so I had to do a bunch of cabinet work to bring it 3" in toward the center of the coach to fit...NOTHING is ever easy!), new faucet, threw out the front gaucho and made bunkbeds for the kids...but overall it has been FUN!

I've often thought a big diesel Class A would be better. Put the kids in the back so they can k!ill each other (not really...but fight a lot) while we ride up front in quiet; as opposed to all four of us plus a dog being in a crew cab pickup together...but the trailer is a ball.

I converted mine to 50amp, and mean to put a thread on here about it. Nice having boatloads of shorepower available. I even have an EU2000i for boondocking and mean to get a second one for summer 'docking....

But the bottom line is...these old trailers are a labor of love. I sure have fun with mine! Hope you all do too!

See ya on the road,

Yeah, these things are a ball...most of the time...

Here is a photo of the bed I was talking about, it would work on any full size bed that lifts. All of the factory beds that I have seen chop up the area under the bed into several compartments, mostly a "left side" and a "right side" With a divider that runs the length of the stand. I put the divider left-to-right across the center. That ends up with a couple of compartments that are at least 3' x 3' and will hold a folding table, lawn chairs, flat screen TV...

This particular photo is from my '63 Overlander with a full size street side bed.

Hi,

Thank you for the picture. I had envisioned the bed supports to be notched a couple of inches vertically to hold the table relatively close to the underside of the plywood bottom, especially based on your comment, "Make a 32" wide notch into the center divider...this way you can lift the bed, lay in a card table and lower the bed...".

I loved Minno's response to you "But, that doesn't give a heck of a lot of head room for playing cards, does it?"

Again, thanks for your effort and the picture. It will help us decide how we want to do ours.

Way back in post #75 from 2011 I replaced the side stripe. Not 'stripes'... blush. I never got around to doing the street side. It looked 'ok'.
Now it is looking pretty sad so I dug around the garage, found the remains of the new decals and checked that they were still usable.

My 6 year old memories are still accurate. This is a crappy project.

It turned cold and wet before I could install the stripe so today I pulled her out of the shed with the intent of doing two things, get the stripe on and pull off the tires. Waaaay back in this thread we bought new Marathons, 8 years ago, so its past time to do it again. We probably have 30,000 miles on these and they still have good tread but I don't want a repeat of what happened to a previous owner, massive tire failure due to old tires. We have been limping along for the last few years only taking out this trailer to local campgrounds.
My good intentions went to pot when the Hensley puked in the driveway. Water intrusion has destroyed the bearings. I completely rebuilt this thing 7? Years ago. All of the other stuff is in great shape, WD bar lock pins are still like new, bushings have been regularly greased and have no wear so it's not like I haven't maintained it. Off to the internet to order new bearings and seals! Oh, it only took :30 to remove and disassemble it but a full hour to drive out the bearing outer races.

At least I got the stripe installed. Tomorrow I have to order seals for the hubs and bearings/seals for the Hensley.
I might just order a big stack of solar panels also.

Can't blame the PO, I rebuilt it when I bought it!

Plenty of stuff to make this a productive weekend. 1st thing, pressure wash the Hensley, grease splattered everywhere but it's clean. Open up the box of bearings from eTrailer and realize I ordered 4 bearing and need 8. Crap. Ordered 4 more and customer service called me to make sure I didn't mistakenly do a butt-order.
Bail on the hitch and move on to the solar panels. Bent up the custom mounts and find out I don't have enough Stainless hardware. Crap.
Skip over to the wheel bearings (left for last because I hate that job). Pull the 1st hub and I need a new magnet. Pull the 2nd hub and it has a broken spring. Place another order to eTrailer.
Give up on everything and grab the pressure washer and climb up on the roof.

No solar, no hitch, bad brakes, ungreased wheel bearings but ATLEAST THE ROOF IS CLEAN!

6 sets of wheel bearings cleaned and repacked, one magnet and one spring replaced. 8 hours. Whew.
Brand new Goodyear tires!
Gotta get the Hensley rebuilt this week.

Your weekend has been going like my week. Replacing the dump valves. Wanted to use ABS because that's what was OEM. Couldn't source locally. Meant to order 3" ABS sewer Tee, but ordered a Y by mistake. It didn't matter because Amazon sent a 2" marked 3". I discovered that PVC is OK if I use the right glue, so sent DW Lowes to buy a PVC T, but told her to buy the wrong one. Needed the "long sweep". DW to Lowes again. Finally ready to put it all back in.

Re-running disc brake lines to wheels. Finally got everything to fit. Bleeding tomorrow if the rain quits long enough.

Bent the leg on a stabilizer on our last trip. Took it off and ordered parts. They'll be here Tuesday.

Trying to get ready to leave for a rally on Thursday......

Al

Plumbing and me, we ain't buddies so I fully understand.
I did get the Hensley reassembled tonight. Between it and 6 wheels I went thru a whole tub of grease. Most of it is in the bearings, the rest is on me.

We are having a small rally this weekend in Vicksburg at the Ameristar casino.

My start/stop solar install made it to a check point. 400w of panels are now attached with custom brackets. Cheap stainless hardware was a major headache, with two sets galling up before the nut was in contact with the bracket. Now it's time to mount the controller and run wires.

Wires ran down the fridge vent to a fused combiner, then forward thru the dinette, the TV cabinet, under the window shelf and then behind the sofa to the controller. Under a tree canopy my $750 project will provide enough power to run a fantastic vent. Is that a good return on investment?

Lol- If you had room on your roof for another 8 panels; your wife could use her hair dryer, as long as there was nothing else running.

I appreciate what you are doing though- with no shore power- and using solar to maintain batteries; your 12volt system will never die.

Our '63 has done well with 200w of solar, but it only has 8 lights or so. The 34' has 50 something bulbs INSIDE!
Realistically we have converted the most used lights to LEDs so it's not that bad...it's still the most capable boondocking trailer that we have with the big tanks and battery bank.
Going camping with good friends this weekend. I hope this thing will fit into the campsite, everyone knows that anything longer than (insert your trailer length here) won't fit into most parks.

HiHo

I got a 95 34’ that has been on the back burner for 5 years. It is still on the back burner but it is now on our driveway, along with the 66 Tradewind, since the storage yard closed.

I stumbled across this thread and it is a great read so want to tag along.
