Can someone tell me if I can change or have somebody else change out the single step on my 2001 Safari (25 ft) to a 2 step assembly, like the classic has or something like that. The wife is having trouble getting inside with just one step , due to bad knees.

In a word, No~!
The undercarriage framework of all A/S, with the exception of the Classic, are designed "NOT" take the 2 step assembly.
And, the factory will not make the changes either.
The 2 step assembly is "reserved" for the Classic line-up only.
This information is straight from the factory.
You might consider getting a portable, folding step from one of the RV stores to aid her..

I know that the newer Safari's now have a two step system, unlike the Classic steps. That may be retrofittable for your Safari. Give Airstream a call and see if that system will work for you. If not, here is the link to the thread regarding a portable step that I used with my '01 Safari.
The portable safety step Jack has referred you to is really handy. It can be used with legs extended to give you an 8" step up. With legs folded it offers you a three inch step up. Measuring 19" X 14 1/2" with non-slip safety tape on the top surfaces, you'll find it to be a safe step complimenting your Airstream's single step.

Same problem here.. Our kids gave us a gift certificate to Camping World for our anniversary to get a "old folks aid". Got a great step that's metal and folds flat for easy storage. Money well spent. Hubby was excited that he didn't have one more thing to do to the trailer.

I have 2 steps on my 05 25'SS Safari.allthough it is not the aluminum ones it works very well.I really like the 2 steps alot better than the 1 step I had on my previous Airstream.It was to high for my lil'one to get inside but now that it has the 2 steps it is no problem for her anymore.

Our Tradewind has 2 aluminum steps.
I heard the aluminum steps are a $1,000 option on new trailers.
I like ours but am concerned about the old bolts. An old traveler warned me about the danger to old bones if the steps collapse.
Whatever, as long as it is safe.
We have the double folding step on our 1976 Overlander. I use this Safety step instead of the second lower step, and many times we only use the Safety Step.
I know Airstream wants to cut costs sometimes to let alot more people who would like there product be much more affordable but it seems from my view that sometimes it is worth the extra dollar to things like the two steps.There are people who do have troubles in getting into places and the 2 steps are nicer on the knees.It makes me wonder why they sometimes do wierd things like this.especially like on Cosmotini's Airstream.His is one of the decked out ones and he got the 1 step wich is really odd.I just got the safari and it came with the 2 step.
