Honey, it followed me home, can I keep it?

After three years of saving money from my blues band gigs, I finally had enough to make a run at buying an Airstream. I looked at a '63 Flying Cloud and made an offer but the kind gentleman wanted to get just a little more for it so I passed. Then I found one 3 miles from my house that was just going up for sale. I talked with the owner and he shot me a price and I wrote him a check the next day. It's a '66 Safari with the original windows still intact. Towed it home yesterday and still can't believe I own an Airstream! From its VIN I believe it's a California-made '66 Safari Double. It looks very original with the exception of the front has been modified to resemble a Safari Twin. In the coming days, months, and years, I am sure to have many questions for the braintrust that is the Forums, so please bear with me as I try to turn my little lump of coal into a diamond.

Jake (my dog) is a chocolate lab. I couldn't post some of the pictures of him and my new '66 because apparently he was even more excited than I was and his photo was not "family-friendly." Someday I hope to be lucky enough to have a Great Dane, but for now it just refers to my family heritage with my last name being Hansen. My grandfather came over on a ship and went through Ellis Island outside of New York when he was just a teenager.

Thanks for all the friendly replies. I can't wait to be shipshape enough to make it to a rally. If anybody lives close enough to Rochester, Mn and could help me out (and enjoys a beer or two), give me a holler @ 507-990-5571.

You Shouldn't Have.........

If you let one follow you home...others will likely follow. I hope you realize what you've done!!!

Welcome to the forum...Looks like a sweet tow.

Looks great, congratulations and welcome to the Forums!

I'm a Texas boy and football is my thing, but I spent many months up in Minneapolis about 10 years ago, and became a big fan of "U" hockey. Going to those games is a blast!

Good luck on the trailer.

Nice looking trailer that just happened to follow you home. As a former midwesterner and one of Danish heritage, I also want to welcome you to the forums. I predict many years of enjoyment now that you've caught Aluminitus. Its a disease we all have to endure.

Gr8Dane. it must be a Minnesota thing, as i just bought a '64 Safari this week as well. Looks like yours may have a better interior. I just might have to take you up on that beer and check it out. Keep the posts and pics coming, and welcome aboard.

Cool bloom is off the rose, time to get busy

So far, my Safari has been sitting in the backyard acting as a playhouse for my two girls. While that is wonderful, I've decided it's time for action...

I took a couple hundred pictures of my baby so I know how it looks when it's together. I have a friend's barn lined up to store it this winter so it will be out of the weather and I can get some work done (with the aid of some propane heaters).

I am attaching a few photos and asking a few questions of the people that have "been there, done that."

Question #1...is there anything special to know when removing the vinyl coated interior skins? Do I just drill out the rivets and off it comes?

Question #2...after looking at the rear crossmember by the black tank I'm sure I have frame issues to address, so what's the best way to proceed?

Question #3...is there any chance a Danish bass player can get this Airstream roadworthy by the Madison International?

Continuing thanks for all your help. I'm making new friends every day and I'm pretty sure that's what Airstreaming is all about!

p.s. the last pic has me seated (holding the cheap beer even though I don't condone its usage) in front of Rochester's finest at an after hours party in the alley (there's not a question related to that photo, I just think it's funny) The guy in the beard is my harp player...

GR8Dane:

Here is a good thread to read from tinman54. The process he is following and the work that he is doing look very familiar to what I will need to do on my '64. This may also be what you are starting to find.
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f228...oor-45125.html

I consider him local. Roberts is just east of Hudson, WI. I'm a visual learner, I certainly can help, so it might be time for a road trip.
