My suspicion is that the plaque may have been added by the original selling dealer as a "Thank You" to the Safari's original purchaser(s). The original owners probably paid in the vicinity of $6,000 for the Safari that would have been comparable to purchasing a new Buick Electra 225 at the time . . . a sizable expenditure, and it wasn't uncommon for Airstream dealers to install such plaques honoring the original purchaser's decision.
To my knowledge, Airstream didn't place plaques identifying the original purchasers on their trailers, but there were times when a plaque with the word "Custom" or something similar might be attached to a trailer that had custom features added at the factory to a customer's special order. I know that this wasn't always the case as my Overlander was a "special order" by its original owners with features that weren't standard or offered in the regular list of options, and it doesn't have any mention of its special order status on the exterior or interior for that matter. While I am not the original owner of the Overlander it was ordered new by friends of my family and it was new when I was five years old.
Good luck with your Safari!
