Were awnings an option ?

Because I just noticed my Sovereign has the rail on the roof but I don't have any holes on the side where the support arms attach to the body so I'm guessing my AS never had them.

Thanks

Probably had a pole awning at some point. Then it would just have the rail.

IIRC awnings in that time period were a dealer option/add-on. The awning rail was standard from the factory though.

Awnings were (and in some models still are) an option. Factory installed or dealer installed, usually Zip Dee or Carefree brands, but I think Zip Dee only from the factory. Awning rails have been standard forever, like from the 50's.

I learn something new everyday but I've only owned it for 5 weeks. I would like to add a Zip Dee awning but they're so expensive for the whole setup.

Greetings CraigCA!

The Zip Dee is definitely a quality product (IMHO). My Over lander started life with an A and E Travel Awn 5000 -- from the fabric to the hardware, it bore little comparison to the quality of the Zip Dee that replaced it about ten years ago. Zip Dee also has the reputation of supporting even their oldest awnings with replacement parts availability. When my original A and E had an arm failure, the manufacturers response was that they no longer made parts for their Airstream A and E awnings (other that roller tubes and fabric).

I am sure that you will appreciate the quality and durability of the Zip Dee.

Kevin

Buy the ZipDee, money well spent.

Ditto. I have several Carefree awnings that I would trade for one ZipDee.

Zip Dee Cost

Craig.
I am interested in a Zip Dee for my 1963 Globetrotter. How much have you been quoted for the complete unit, not including fitting. I am just interested as to whether I can afford one. Best wishes.

Hi Emma

I know it is not as sexy as a zip dee but we have fitted a Fiamma Caravanstore awning on our 69 Globtrotter. They are available in this country and are not too expensive plus spares are readily available.

Here is a picture of the first one we put on. We have now replaced this with a full length one.

We live full time in our Airstream down in Cornwall and the awning has made a huge difference to our life.

We got ours second hand but you can get new ones from here

The awning legs normally go down to the ground but you can get brackets so the legs go to the side of the Airstream instead. This makes the whole awning much more stable. I got my brackets from the same people in the link above but I can't find them on that site at the moment but here is a link to the same thing on ebay for the same price

Hope this helps

Jules

Story of awnings...

I have two Airstreams 1975 and a 1980, both are 31' units. The 1975 has had at least 2 sets of awnings, if not 3 based on the holes and patch plates. Currently it has a broken A&E, no parts available. My 1980 has the original ZipDee still on it, needs some work and new fabric, but it is still repairable and parts are readily available even though it is 35 years old. The A&E is less than 15 years old and only a few of the parts are available. IIRC the last quote I got for a full set of ZipDee awnings for my 1975 was close to $5,000 but that was for 3-4 awnings and I believe included installation. That was for a full length right side, full length narrow left side and a rear window awning. The quote was similar substituting window awnings for the left side in lieu of the full length one. I live in the Deep South so a full length awning on the off side is almost a necessity.

Thank you so much. Your's looks great and it is so affordable. Zip Dee will not ship so there would be problems getting it to the UK. The overall cost including shipping and fitting would be £1600 so I think you have answered my problem. So grateful
