Rex if it is an R22 unit that is 12 years old it may be internally bypassing and this will show as no differential between pressure / vacuum on the gauge set.
If it is R22 bite the bullet and go for R410A. They are phasing out R22.
The AC guy will charge you to recover the R22 from the bad system, do the new R22 compressor, and then refill with R22.
There are R22 compressors out there on ebay but you are buying into dead technology.
You can however, remove your old exterior unit, flush the R22 oil out of the lineset and interior coil, then hook up a new R410A outside unit.
The outside units come precharged with enough R410A to fill the system. All you have to do is sweat the lineset to the new outside unit, draw a vacuum on the inside unit then, open the valves to the outside unit and the charge stored in it fills the entire system to a running charge.

An old AC guy showed me the drop test.. If the compressor is bypassing pick up the outside unit about an inch of the ground and drop it. If it suddenly starts blowing hot(er) air in your face the compressor is dying. Or it may work for a few more days

Mr. Dark....thanks for the information, but for me, it's information overload . Anyway Timberline AC called today and said it would cost $1,065. to install a new compressor, so I gave the go ahead to order the parts and install it sometime next week.
I looked at new complete AC units at Home Depot for $3,400, so a thousand dollars sounds pretty good to get the AC working. Looks like it will hit 100 degrees on the 21st...so hopefully the AC will be up and running by then.
Today I purchased 12 board feet of Red birch, (three 6"x8' boards), came home and cut into 2" wide by 8 foot long boards on the table saw, then cut to my measurements to make four cabinet doors. Three for the kitchen cabinets, and one for the food pantry next to the refrgerator.
Photos are of the Red Birch that I cut out and ready to assemble into doors tomorrow, and the first two doors under the kitchen sink.

Today I'm going to visit my Mom in the Hospital.... She is having some problems with her pacemaker. This weekend I built three more doors, so I may get back to the cabinets tomorrow. More important things to do today....family first!

Today is The Bunny's birthday... so, we are going out for dinner and then off to the NA casino, Win River. Happy Birthday Bunny!!!!!!
PS, the AC is still not working right, and the service tech is installing a 2nd compressor. 101+ degrees here today, so I sure hope this new compressor works.
I'm also having problems locating vintage "surface cabinet hinges". Not sure what I'm going to do about that issue with my AS, Rita. I have called all around town, and now looking on the internet. If anyone has purchased hinges lately and are happy with what that got, please pass on the intel.

Happy birthday to THE Bunny! I hope your Mom is doing well.
Not sure what you envision as far as hinges go. I'm sure you should be able to find something close.

The Bunny says thanks.... The hinges I'm looking for, are called a "surface hinge", which means both sides of the hinge show on the face of the door and cabinet. Like this one, only in chrome... I think this model is called "the streamline", from the 30's....just found it on the net.
I want that Old School look....

Hey!! another thing we have in common. The Bunny and I share a birthday. Hope you guys had a nice eve and that your mother is doing well. My 84 year old mother and 90 year old step father cooked us steaks, eggplant parm, and papa tony's fab garden salad served with a nice chianti followed by homemade Italian wedding cake. So I am off for a swim before going to work and nothing but celery to eat today.
And we leave for fort desoto this afternoon. Makes all the hard work seem worth while.

Hinges
Rex,
I found hinges that mount like you want at OSH. This place has many types and styles also.

Hey Rex
That cabinet hinge can be found at Rejuvenation.com Art Deco Surface Hinge: Nickel-Plated Brass
I can attest to their quality, the company is top notch and I have many of their lights and hardware. Pretty pricey though.....
Happy belated Birthday to Bunny!

Thanks Ms. reiner & Mr. Hoot for the intel on hinges.... The Bunny went shopping @ Ross, for shoes. So, when she gets home, maybe we can order hinges and pulls and/or knobs.
More good news, Campground by the lake, @ South Lake Tahoe just called and said that we have a new and Bigger!!!!! Campsite for the 4th of July. Very Good News!
Also got reservations for Jackson Ranch KOA for 10-8/9-11, which is the same weekend as the NorCal Airstream group campout! $10 more than the group is paying, but we will be next to the Rally!!!!! The group had 30 sites reserved, and I think they were filled within days, (so I missed the boat), but the KOA campground still has sites for Nomads, like us. I am very excited about getting a site and hopefully meeting other Airstream trailer owners.
Going to the Hospital to see my Mom at 1230..... hopefully she can come home tomorrow!

Tonight we went to "Friday night at the Park" in Shasta Lake City.... Fun, the band played 70's, 80's, and 90's music. The Cars, Dooby Bros, Eagles, and Grand Funk Railroad....and many, many more. The 2nd photo is Prono Bob/Sue, and The Bunny and I.
