Thank you Minno & Dremstreamer for your replies. It sounds like my issues are in the finessing part. I too am doing this frame on. Oh and learning curve has lots to do with it all as well.
I hope to some day be able to lift everything from the subfloor up off of the frame, then pull the frame out for restoration. My thinking is completely opposite of the traditional "frame off" but is the only way I can make it all happen.
I live full time in my Sovereign.
Thanks again for the information but more for the inspiration!

When we brought Little Girl in to have the shock mounts repaired, we learned that she needed new axles. We're thinking the Alaska trip was a little harder on her than we originally thought. Since we were replacing the axles (paying someone to do it this time!), we decided to raiser her 2 inches.
Above pic is before the new axles.
This pic is after the new axles. She's definitely 2 inches higher, as we have noticed stopping at rest areas and going in and out of her without putting the steps down. May buy a step stool to keep inside the door for rest area stops.
The axles came in and we got her back the day before we were leaving for Texas. Cutting it close! But Crystal Welding bumped her up in their queue and got it done for us in time. She's stored down there for the first part of the winter.
Other than being 2 inches higher, there is not any noticeable difference in how she tows. However, we do need to be more careful in how much water is left in the toilet bowl as it splashed out a few times during our trip. Simple fix, just open the flush valve to drain most of the water out of the bowl, but it's another thing to remember to do when traveling. Sopping up water off the floor should get us to remember to do that fairly quickly!
On our trip to Texas, we finally got to add Oklahoma to our state map!

Axels and map are looking good.
Since you've done your axels previously, how old were the ones you've just replaced.

After spending years on this forum, I don't know how I never ran across your build thread. Really great work, well documented and quite a marathon read. Forty-seven pages with 20 posts per page is remarkable. I admit I didn't read every post, but managed to pick up a whole bunch of ideas. Thanks. -Mark

Our axles were only 11 years old but were bent somehow. We think, probably Alaska. Originally we thought they were sized well for our trailer, but now am wondering if were were a little off. No worries now!
We're still working on tweaking the door, but have to quit now until February. Trailer is in storage in Texas until then. We'll be at the 4 Corners Solar Eclipse Rally in April.

Thanks Kay for the axel response.
We just had to cancel our eclipse reservation with 4CU as our trailer is still in with the renovator. It would have been nice to see you again. (Vintage Academy)

There was a Colorado Airstream Club member who bent an axle on the awful rough I70 in our state. I think Colorado has some of the worst roads in the country. Just lots of potholes. Maybe due to the freeze thaw we have here, but I don't know.
We took an Airstream trip to Washington State to see Olympic National Park and the rain forest there. Colorado was the worst compared to Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.
Did you ever learn where your axle was bent. Maybe the spindle to the swing arm joint? Or may the actual axle tube. It is hard to imagine a pot hole bending such a heavy steel axle. But they do take quite a jolt hitting a pothole at 60 mph.

Nope, we don't know where on the axles they were bent. Probably a pretty sure bet we never hit a pothole at 60mph in Alaska because we never went that fast! Plenty of lower velocity ones though and lots and lots of frost heaves. Hard to miss some of them...
So sorry we won't see you at the Eclipse, Hittenstiehl! We were hoping.... Remember you well!

Tool Drawer
One thing I learned on the Alaska trip was digging my toolboxes out when I needed them was a pain. So, I built a full extension drawer (16" x 4') that goes under the right-hand cargo box in the back of the pickup. I wish I could figure out how to rotate the pics so they are right-side up. Editing them on my computer doesn't seem to help.
These show the drawer under construction in my workshop. I added a 1/4" plywood top to the box.
Here it is installed in the truck. Now I have access to my tools without needing to unload anything. I'm hoping that by doing this I'll never need to access them on the side of the highway again! My tool boxes used to ride at the very back of the top shelf (toward the front of the truck bed), so there was always stuff in the way.

Looks very usable, you can get to both sides unlike those 1,000.00 metal trays they want to sell you. Great job once again.
