My husband mentioned that the door to our 76 Sovereign does not lock from the inside. This means we have been camping HOW MANY TIMES with the door unlocked? Six ...I don't think I would have slept so well all those times had I known.

SO..my question is HOW DO YOU LOCK THE DOOR FROM THE INSIDE? Are we missing some hardware?

Can someone post a picture of what it is suppose to look like with the inside lock in place. It would be a big help.

There is a pin that's just to the left of the inside handle, that is the locking pin.

It vertically moves a "vertical locking shaft."

Hi Kani,

Here is a picture of the locking knob on the lock we took out of our trailer. As you can see, the old locking knob had a knurled end and a very thin shaft that connected to the inside of the mechanism.

If you don't see this knob next to the handle, it may have broken off or been removed and lost at some point. It did not take much effort to unscrew it, as I recall.

From the picture Andy provided, it looks like they beefed up that shaft at some point. By the way, Andy, we still are very happy with the replacement lock we got from you.

I know our coach is 10 years older but maybe a PO has switched yours.....or ours. Ours locks from the inside by twisting the knob to the left until it clicks.

If you are missing the pin, you can use a 1 1/2" long machine screw (I can't remember the thread size). It'll screw right into the hole where the pin is missing from.

When We purchase ours I found the same problem. The bolt handle was missing Possibly vibrated out. I went threw my machinists tool box and found a 6/32 or 8/32 machine screw/Allen head(don't remember the size) and lock-tight it in the mechanism. I used the blue lok-tight in case I wanna take it out.That works just fine.

I changed out the no knob back on the dead bolt to one with a knob. I like the bigger security. I don't even think I looked at the latch lock.

Your trailer has a Bargman lock.

Kani's trailer has a KT lock.

Both of these locks are original equipment, and operate very different from each other.

Thank you all so much you have been very helpful. I will check the lock later today (after it warms up a bit). I do remember a whole on the latch and wondered what it was for. The pictures are very helpful also.

The hole will be immediately to the left of the lever. If you get a flashlight, you should be able to look in there and see where the threaded machine screw will go. When I get home tonight, I'll see if I can't find the correct size for you.

Photo of the verticaql locking shaft, and the locking pin.

If the locking pin broke off in the shaft, you will have to take the lock out of the door. You may or may not be able to remove the broken piece from the shaft.

Unfortunately, Airstream used 2 sizes of pins. One is 6/32 and the other is 8/32.

Yes we carry the pin.

But Airstream made 2 sizes. We have no idea which one you may have.

The one we have is the larger size. If worst came to worst, you would have to tap out the hole in the shaft to match the new pin.

Kani, simplest thing to do is go to your local hardware store and buy a 1 1/4" long 6/32 and 8/32 machine screw (one of them aught to fit) to replace the missing pin. Then you'll know if you have the right to order from Andy. They come loose pretty easily though, so I'd just buy a few of the machine screws that fit to keep on hand as replacements. Then you're never without the ability to lock up your trailer from inside.

Thank you so much...I will go buy a few 1 1/4" long 6/32 and 8/32 machine screws. Sounds like a plan to me! I would rather try your idea 1st. This might just be the cheapest fix we have done so far.

I also thread a couple of bolts down to the head of the screw and tighten them really well. This gives you something to hold onto when operating the lock.

Today we decided to put a 6/32 screw into the door lock (inside). We took the POS screw that was there out and NOW we can't find the hole to screw the new screw into. Has is slipped out of the picture? If so how do we fix it? HELP!

That locking pin can rotate.

You will have to remove the lock in order to get the screw into the threaded hole.

Hey Kani,

I have attached a picture of the back of the lock where you can see the original knurled knob that locks the door. If you can see the round bar with the notch in it, I believe the knob screws into that. If the bar has moved up or down, the threaded hole could be up or down in that slot.
