I have a water filter located on the outside of the a/s where the water connections are made. My A/S sat for a number of years before we started using it, and I have been afraid to use this filter. I was wondering if there are new inserts for this filter so that I could start to use it? I got down and looked at the filter the other day and could not see a way to change an insert.

Since it's been who knows how many years since it was used last, I say the safest thing is to throw it away and, start all over again with a fresh system. It's cheaper then having to make a emergency run to the hospital or, being laid up with the creepies.
When in doubt, alway throw it away or, replace it. In this case, since you can't replace the inserts..I'd opt to replace it.

My husband is worried that if I go to Target or HD or someplace and get a water filter assembly of similar size, that it might not have the same flow capacity and we might burn up our water pump. Now, the pump is on the water side of this filter, but then the pump has to pump the water through the filter.

And I opportunistically noticed that FlyingCloud is online. So thought I might get an informed opinion!

This is FC...
The flow issue as you have correctly surmised.."Is not an real issues."
The things that you should be concerned with is:
1.Getting a replacement filter that fits properly.
(As you know, not all filters are designed the same.)
2.Gives the level of protection you require while traveling.
In this respect, what you'd really like to look for is:
A filter that removes the majority of bacterias that cause the nasties.
These are usually abit more expensive, but worth the additional cost`
I would take the old filter with me, and use it for size comparison.
Home Depot or Lowe's, would be two good choices to check.
I'll be doing the very same thing here in a day or two..

PS..I might add this too.
Once you've changed your filter.
It would be a good idea to change it on a regular interval~
I hope you have better luck with your filter case than mine..
The PO didn't remove the water in it before winter, and it's busted all around the base..
Just as well..After looking at the inside..YUCK`!
It had "petrified" alge growth~!!

Struck out at Home Depot, so I went to the local Campers Inn. I found the direct replacement for my original filter in the 64 GT there~[Was I ever impressed~!]
Cost was 31.95$, plus 15$ for an upgraded filter.
Culligan's Model#US-316
CBC-5 upgraded filter
Which filters the following:
Sediment
Foul taste & odor
Chlorine
Chemicals
Cryptosporidium/Giardia
Filter good for 12 month or 1,000 gallons
Not too bad for a basic front line defense

FC You are going to put a prefilter on that I hope. Otherwise the tiny stuff will block it in no time and your flow will go to drinking water only. A sacrificial sediment filter will let the good one last longer. You have to have a very fine micron rating on that to caught those bugs.

For virus you're right~You'd need something in the extremely low micron level~but, we're talking about mostly Bacteria here..The kind which causes the nasties, which are much larger~
I do prefer the prefilter concept, and think everyone should use one at the input of the city water..

I would (& do) pre-treat the entire water system, including all hoses, fittings, filter housings, etc. before use, or re-use. At the beginning of each season a weak bleach solution (approx. 7oz. to 35 gals. H2O) left in full contact for 4 hours will kill, sanitize your 'stuff'. Hoses & fixtures (pressure regulators, 'Y' connectors, etc.) can be placed in a bath-tub and covered with the solution for the 4 hours min. I have not had any problem with removing the smell &/or taste of the bleach with copious rinsing & flushing-tap water. Some have recommended using bicarb. soda to help with any 'left-over' taste or smell.
