I'll do that. The original is nothing special. Just a black button with a small white circle around the button. I think the replacement I bought looks much better than the original...

Now I've replaced the button and the chimes and still nothing! Jumping the posts doesn't make the new chimes chime either.

Ok, unless anyone has any other ideas, I'm giving up on the doorbell. I've replaced the switch and the chimes and still nothing. I can't believe something so simple is causing me so much frustration.

Forget my last comment. I got it working!! Still not sure what the exact problem was, but after I replaced the switch, the fuse must have blown, because I checked the fuse before I started and it was fine.

My lesson learned is to keep checking the fuses! Thanks to all for providing help.

If you jumped the posts on the switch, no harm would be done. If you jumped the posts on the chime itself with the button pushed, you would have blown the fuse by bypassing the coil in the chiime.

My doorbell works...just about the only thing on the Excella that does.

But as I was reading this thread I noticed a very good question that had not been answered. Surely with all the electrical expertise on the forum someone knows don't you think??

Common household doorbells will work just fine on 12v DC. The household converters put out 16v AC which is a sine wave. It is the average voltage that rings the bell/buzzer and that is a lot less than the 16v peak. If you look at the RMS (Root Mean Square) of the 16v AC, you will find that the energy content is not far from what you get with 12v DC.

My door bell is made by NuTone and powered by 4 C batteries. The bell stopped doing it's 'ding' after about a 300 mile ride. I opened the white box under the fold-down kitchen counter extension and found that 3 of the 4 batteries had come loose and fell out, probably while in travel. The box design and construction is pretty M-Mouse, so I put some fairly thin foam inside the cover of the box lid before replacing it to put a little pressure on the batteries to hold them in place - so far, so good.

My button on my 93 Excella is located on the trailer grab handle next to the door. A couple of years ago the button wires broke off. The repair would involve removing some inner skin. To me it's not worth it. I disconnected the power at the bell itself under the couch. If I ever fix it I may put in an A-oo-gah horn under the stairs.
